Supreme Court on Thursday took suo motu cognizance of the highly sensitive and extremely shocking instance of a video dated 4-05-2023 showing two women paraded naked and subjected to sexual violence while the ethnic conflict in Manipur is still ablaze.

The Supreme Court Bench led by Dr D.Y. Chandrachud, JJ. directed the Central and State government to inform the steps taken against the perpetrators in the instant matter. The Court agitatedly commented that the incident of Manipur women paraded naked, using women as instruments to perpetrate violence in a charged atmosphere was completely unacceptable reflecting gross constitutional violations and infraction of human rights, and that if the government does not act against the culprits, the Court will.

The Court remarked that “We are very deeply disturbed by the videos which have emerged yesterday about the two women who were paraded in Manipur. We are expressing our deep concern. It is time that the government really steps in and takes action.”

The Court listed the next hearing in batch of cases related to ethnic conflict in Manipur for next Friday.
