Meghalaya miners: We don’t know if they are dead or alive. What steps have you taken?: SC to State

Supreme Court: Reacting upon the unsatisfactory approach of the Meghalaya Government to rescue 15 miners, trapped in an illegal flooded coal mine in East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya since December 13, 2018, the Bench of Ranjan Gogoi, CJ and SK Kaul, J said that “we are not satisfied with the rescue operations” and asked exactly what steps have been taken.

Upon Meghalaya Government’s submission that  72 NDRF personnel, 14 Navy personnel & Coal India personnel were working since Dec 14 to rescue the trapped miners, the Court asked “Then why are they not successful?”

Terming the matter to be “very serious” as the question of life and death of the miners was involved, the Court said:

“We don’t know what happened to them in 18 days. We don’t know they are dead or alive. Something urgently must have done.”

The Court also asked the State why Army was not allowed to help even though it had offered to help.
