Justice T.S. Thakur sworn in as the Chief Justice of India

On 3-12-2015, Shri Justice T.S. Thakur was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. He made and subscribed to the oath of office before the President Pranab Mukherjee.

In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 124 (2) of the Constitution of India, the President appointed Justice Tirath Singh Thakur, Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 3-12-2015.

Justice T.S. Thakur was born on 4-1-1952. He was enrolled as a Pleader in October, 1972 and joined the Chamber of his father Late Shri D.D. Thakur, a leading Advocate and later, a Judge of High Court of J &K.  He was designated a senior advocate in 1990 and was invited to the Bench as an Additional Judge of the J&K High Court. He served as Judge of the High Court of Karnataka and Delhi, and later on was appointed as Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in 2008. He took over as Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana in 2008 and was elevated as Judge of Supreme Court in 2009.

He was conferred Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) degree by Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow on 31-10-2015. His tenure will be till 3-1-2017.
