Food Safety Goes Digital with Connect App and QR Code Innovation: Inside FSSAI Advisory

On 25-7-2025, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (‘FSSAI’) circulated an advisory regarding ‘Display of Food Safety Connect Mobile App QR Code/Download Link at Food Premises’. This advisory is meant to improve food safety and make people more aware of it by encouraging food businesses to use digital tools to help consumers across India.

Key points of the FSSAI advisory:

  1. Under this advisory, all Food Business Operators (‘FBO’s) are mandated to clearly put up the Licence/Registration Copy containing QR code linked to the Food Safety Connect mobile application at display in places including:
    • Restaurants
    • Dhabas
    • Cafes
    • Any other food service establishment.
  2. This QR code has to be prominently visible and displayed at key customer-facing areas such as entrances, billing counters, and seating spaces to ensure easy access, in compliance with conditions of Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.
  3. In addition to physical display, advisory also directed the food businesses to feature the QR code or app download link across:
    • Their digital platforms
    • Websites
    • Online ordering portals
    • E-menus
  4. FSSAI has developed the Food Safety Connect app that allows consumers to:
    • File complaints about unhygienic food practices
    • Report misleading product claims
    • Verify FBO license and registration details
    • Receive real-time food safety alerts
  5. Any complaint submitted through the app will be automatically directed to the relevant jurisdictional authority for fast and effective resolution.
  6. This advisory empowers consumers to take an active role in monitoring food safety while holding food businesses accountable.
  7. It also marks a notable shift toward a more transparent and technology-driven regulatory framework, reinforcing FSSAI’s commitment to protecting public health and enhancing food hygiene nationwide.
  8. FBOs are encouraged are encouraged to promote the advisory and implement necessary measures concerning the mobile application and QR code display as outlined in Annexure I.
