NHRC takes suo motu cognizance of reported beating of student at the behest of his teacher in referring to his faith in Muzaffarnagar; Issues notice to UP Govt.

National Human Rights Commission: In a significant development in the notoriously viral incident wherein it was reported that a teacher of a private school, while referring to the faith of one of her students ordered his classmates to beat him; the NHRC on 29-08-2023 took suo motu cognizance of the matter and issued notice to the Government of Uttar Pradesh over the matter.

The NHRC in its press release observed that reportedly, the boy’s family has said that the student was beaten up for a mistake in the multiplication of tables, during the class. A video of the incident went viral on 25-08-2023, leading to calls for action against the teacher and the school.

The Commission further observed that the contents of the media report, if true, amount to a violation of the victim’s human rights and accordingly issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh calling for a detailed report in the matter within four weeks. The detailed report should include the action taken against the teacher, the status of the FIR registered in the matter and compensation if any, paid to the aggrieved family, as well as steps taken/proposed to be taken to ensure that such shameful incidents do not recur in the future.
