Govt extends compliance deadline for machinery and electrical equipment under Omnibus Technical Regulation, 2025

Omnibus Technical Regulation

On 12-6-2025, the Ministry of Heavy Industries issued ‘Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) Amendment Order, 2025’ to implement key changes in compliance timeline. This amendment seeks to provide the manufacturers, importers, and industry stakeholders additional time to adhere to stringent safety and technical standards. This order has come into force on 13-6-2025.

Key points:

  1. This order revises the compliance timeline set by Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) Order, 2024 to take effect from 1-9-2026 as against the time limit decided earlier which was one year (August 2025) from its publication date.

  2. By extending the implementation deadline, the amendment provides manufacturers and importers additional time to ensure their machinery and electrical equipment meet Bureau of Indian Standards certification and safety regulations.

  3. Along with modification in timeline, the amendment order also redefines the scope of the original regulation by extending its applicability to machines and electrical equipment listed in the First Schedule from 1-9-2026.

  4. To ensure structural adjustments without disruption, assemblies, sub-assemblies, and components listed in the First Schedule will be regulated at a later date, set to be notified separately by the Central Government in the Official Gazette.

  5. Safety standards can now be enforced before the compliance timeline to prevent penalties, import restrictions, or product bans.

Note-

The term ‘Omnibus Technical’ refers to a set of regulatory frameworks designed to consolidate standards, guidelines, and related measures into a single order, ensuring streamlined compliance and enforcement. In this context, the Omnibus Technical Regulation for Machinery and Electrical Equipment serves as a structured regulatory framework established by the Ministry to define scope, compliance requirements, and implementation protocols, aimed at enforcing safety and technical standards for machinery and electrical equipment.
