Theme: The Challenge of Satellite Internet in India
Satellite internet provides high-speed connectivity to remote and underserved regions by transmitting signals directly from satellites to ground terminals. While it offers significant advantages, especially in difficult terrains, it also poses serious challenges. One major issue is the lack of clear regulatory frameworks governing satellite internet services, leading to concerns over spectrum management, licensing, and cross-border signal interference. Security risks such as unmonitored data flows, espionage, and cyberattacks become harder to control without localized infrastructure.
Additionally, satellite internet can bypass national laws like internet shutdowns during emergencies, raising sovereignty and governance concerns. The absence of enforceable agreements with foreign providers further complicates legal accountability. As satellite internet expands, governments must develop robust legal and technical measures to ensure national security, protect data sovereignty, and regulate cross-border digital activities effectively.
