Process of granting online permission for slaughter of goats stopped; previous permissions under scrutiny: Bombay HC

Bombay High Court: The Division Bench comprising of Riyaz I. Chagla and Abhay S. Oka, JJ., addressed a writ petition concerning the instances in which members of the Bar have been granted permissions for slaughter of goats.

The petition states that on 14-08-2018 the permission to slaughter goats in the office premises was produced. Further, the learned counsel for the petitioner presented two such copies of permission, one such permission to Neil Armstrong to slaughter five goats in room no. 13 of Bombay High Court. The documents that were presented clearly indicated that no application of mind was put while granting such permissions by the Municipal Corporation.

The Court was asked to bring its attention to this pertinent Rule 3 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Slaughter House) Rules, 2001, which states that “No person shall slaughter any animal within a municipal area except in a slaughter house recognized or licensed by the concerned authority.”

Further, the Counsel for Mumbai Municipal Corporation stated that the process of granting online permissions will immediately be stopped. The High Court raised a concern for scrutinizing the online permissions already been granted and the petition has been listed for 20-8-2018. [Jiv Maitri Trust v.
