The promises of the administration of National Law University Odisha have failed to put an end to the indefinite protest started by its students.

The students started the protests three days ago highlighting various infrastructural concerns. The Student Body is firm in its demands and the 800 students remain indefatigable two days into the protest.

The administration was quoted saying that “bad teachers should be given a chance to improve because they are good humans”, implying that it admits to the low quality of faculty.

The students had also demanded substitution of faculty resident warden with non-faculty resident warden which the administration strongly opposed. They were of the view that faculty resident warden was essential given the inherent respect for teachers as against a non-teaching staff. The demand to waive-off hostel-in timing, which was promised to the students way back in time, was denied by the Vice Chancellor; while an experimental extension till 12 midnight was proposed.

The protesting students are also disappointed that the administration has failed to take notice of the two most pressing problems faced by the students – the repair and construction of Girls Hostel II and the construction of the promised world-class library.

The students and the administration have reached an accord for issues related to the examination and academic policies. Demands of a permanent medical dispensary, ambulance and nurses to meet medical exigencies have also been acceded. The implementation of any of these promises however is yet to be done, pending which the students still remain skeptical. The issue related to hike in the fee for first year students by 30,000 rupees has been put forth the Executive Council for reconsideration. Assurances were made that the Air Conditioners in the Academic Block will become functional within a week, but these oral assurances made by the Registrar were devoid of any gravity, the students feel.

The students are viewing these promises as hollow and the protests are continuing unabated
