{"id":91291,"date":"2016-12-09T14:50:45","date_gmt":"2016-12-09T09:20:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/?p=91291"},"modified":"2016-12-09T14:50:45","modified_gmt":"2016-12-09T09:20:45","slug":"petition-challenging-demonetisation-of-currency-notes-dismissed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2016\/12\/09\/petition-challenging-demonetisation-of-currency-notes-dismissed\/","title":{"rendered":"Petition challenging demonetisation of currency notes, dismissed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Karnataka High Court:<\/strong> While dealing with a writ petition challenging the demonetisation of\u00a0the currency notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 denominations, the Division Bench comprising of\u00a0Subhro Kamal Mukherjee, CJ. and Budihal R.B., J. failed to find any merit in the petition and\u00a0therefore, dismissed it accordingly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The petitioner has challenged the demonetisation on three grounds: there is no reasonable\u00a0classification in demonetising the currency notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 denominations\u00a0only; the people who are not computer savvy are facing difficulties; and the notification was\u00a0issued without giving any intimation to the general public.\u00a0The Court observed that demonetisation was a necessary step to tackle with the problem of\u00a0fake currency notes, and people who had unaccounted money would only suffer from this\u00a0step. It also observed that the initial problems due to demonetisation would not last long.\u00a0The Court, thus, rejected the petition for lack of merit.
