{"id":71851,"date":"2016-09-21T12:46:59","date_gmt":"2016-09-21T07:16:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/?p=71851"},"modified":"2016-12-08T17:44:26","modified_gmt":"2016-12-08T12:14:26","slug":"nhrc-issues-notice-to-karnataka-and-tn-governments-over-handling-of-situation-post-release-of-cauvery-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2016\/09\/21\/nhrc-issues-notice-to-karnataka-and-tn-governments-over-handling-of-situation-post-release-of-cauvery-water\/","title":{"rendered":"NHRC issues notice to Karnataka and TN Governments over handling of situation post release of Cauvery water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>National Human Rights Commission:<\/strong> Taking \u00a0serious exception to the handling of \u00a0the situation by the Governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over the release of water from Kaveri; NHRC \u00a0has issued notices \u00a0to the Governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.\u00a0The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the reports of large scale violent protests, arson and destruction of public and private property, worth crores of rupees, in Bengaluru by protestors against the directions of the Supreme Court of India, directing Karnataka to release water from the Kaveri river to Tamil Nadu.\u00a0Expressing its anguish over the incidents, the Commission, in a hard hitting statement observed that it appears from the National Television channels that civil and police authorities in both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu remained mere onlookers and took no advance steps to stop the hooligans indulging in such illegal acts who played with life and liberty of the people.\u00a0It also observed that the authorities should have anticipated and prepared themselves to meet the emergency situations in view of the sensitivity of water sharing issue faced by people of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The police and civil authorities woke up to the situation only after the large scale physical violence and destruction of public and private property. After the event, imposing curfew further added to the denial of right of access to hospitals and other emergencies facilities for three days.\u00a0Taking serious exception to the violation of human rights due to the apathetic attitude of the people holding public office and their lack of accountability towards people&#8217;s life and safety, the Commission \u00a0issued notices to the Governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, through their Chief Secretaries and the Director Generals of Police, calling for reports on the number of persons injured and destruction of public and private property during these protests.
