National Law University Delhi organized its third annual convocation on 30th<\/sup> August, Sunday, in the Auditorium Hall of the University. The ceremony was presided over by Chief Guest, Shri Arun Jaitley, Hon\u2019ble Union Minister of Finance, Corporate Affairs and Information and Broadcasting and Hon\u2019ble Ms Justice G. Rohini, Chief Justice, Delhi High Court and Chancellor of NLU, Delhi. The ceremony started sharp at 11:00 a.m. with the arrival of the dignitaries followed by the academic procession. Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh, Hon\u2019ble Vice Chancellor of the University delivered the inaugural address and congratulated the graduating batch on their various successful endeavors and contributions to the University and wished them for their future life from the entire family of NLU Delhi. Hon\u2019ble Ms Justice G. Rohini, Chief Justice, Delhi High Court and Chancellor of NLU, Delhi conferred all the degrees. The convocation process began by awarding of LL.D. degrees on three students, which was then followed by awarding of LL.M. degrees, concluding in the conferment of degrees of B.A. LL.B (Hons.). It was followed by the much-awaited medal awarding ceremony and various students received gold medals, which were bestowed upon them by various dignitaries. Punya Verma bagged 6 gold medals, the highest in the batch, and cash prize, which were awarded to him for Constitutional Law, Public Law and Criminal Law and for being the 1st<\/sup> rank holder in the batch. Sarvatrajit Singh bagged 5 gold medals for Banking Law, ADR, 2nd<\/sup> rank holder of the batch, Best student of the year and for Overall Excellence. Tanima Tandon- Vice Chancellor Medal for overall best female student <\/span><\/p>\n

Shri Arun Jaitley, Hon\u2019ble Union Minister of Finance, Corporate Affairs and Information and Broadcasting, who had few interesting observations and advice for the graduating batch, delivered the convocation address. His speech was a reflection of the growth of the legal education and legal sector and the changes, which he had witnessed. He reflected upon the determinants and factors, which make a premier institution and with that acknowledged the existence of NLU Delhi as being one of them in the legal education sector and appreciated the role of Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh, Hon\u2019ble Vice Chancellor of the University. He commented that previously law was not a preferred course, and so was not very competitive thereby resulting in average quality of lawyers and litigation practice, notwithstanding some exceptions. But presently with the unleashing of opportunities and emergence of jobs in law firms, counsels, banks, the legal sector had become far more competitive and the age-old principle of survival of the fittest had now found its relevance. He mentioned that excellence was now the norm and mediocrity no longer persisted as an option and stressed upon the role played by the colleges in providing excellent prospects for personality development. In a thought-provoking observation he remarked that the age of grey eminence was over and the world today respected merit regardless of age. He opined that areas of core competence in legal profession had now diversified but observed that legal academism was the need of the hour and the state today required legal academics who were capable of facilitating the legislation drafting process. He concluded by wishing all the students, the best in their lives and thanked the University for inviting him for convocation ceremony.
