The Department of Justice (Appointments Division), Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, notified the appointment of Ajay Sharma as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court<\/span> through a notification dated 5 November 2026<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The appointment has been made by the President of India under Article 224(1) of the Constitution of India for a period of 2 years from the date he assumes charge of his office<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Supreme Court Collegium recommendation<\/p>\n

The appointment follows the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium dated 26 October 2026<\/span>, which approved the proposals for appointment of Ajay Sharma, Judicial Member of the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT), Mumbai<\/span>, along with Advocate Vaibhav Anant Sugdare as Judges of the Bombay High Court.<\/p>\n

Ajay Sharma, who enrolled as an advocate in 1994, was appointed Judicial Member of CESTAT by the President of India through an Office Order dated 11 April 2018.<\/p>\n

Vacancy position in Bombay High Court<\/p>\n

According to the Department of Justice’s latest statement on the sanctioned strength, working strength and vacancies of Judges, as on 1 November 2026<\/span>, the Bombay High Court had 19 vacancies<\/span> against a sanctioned strength of 94 Judges.<\/p>\n

The High Court had a working strength of 75 Judges<\/span>, comprising 55 permanent Judges and 20 Additional Judges. Of the 19 vacant positions, 16 were in the permanent Judges category and 3 in the Additional Judges category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/colgroup>\n\n\n\n\n\n
