His work spans advising on payment systems, cryptocurrency and blockchain-related matters, data governance, and the launch of digital and fintech businesses.

He has also written for leading legal publications and international comparative guides on fintech, data protection, and blockchain regulation. Chambers and Partners and the Legal 500 have recognised him for his sector knowledge and practical approach to complex regulatory matters.

1. What prompted you to choose law and, most importantly, technology and fintech as a definitive career path?

I am a third-generation lawyer, so the law was always present in my life. I grew up watching my father advise clients, often over the telephone, and I saw at close quarters the responsibility that comes with the profession. That made law a natural choice, although I would not say I had my entire career mapped out at the beginning. I started as an intellectual property lawyer and later moved into corporate law.

My transition into technology and fintech was driven more by opportunity than by a fixed plan. At the time, many businesses were moving from offline models to digital platforms. They needed lawyers who could understand the business and help them navigate corporate, legal, and regulatory questions together. I found that work intellectually engaging, and one opportunity led to another. Looking back, I think careers often develop in that way. It helps to remain open, do the work in front of you well, and build trust over time. Domain knowledge matters, but the qualities that sustain a career are quite basic: ethics, the right temperament, curiosity, and a willingness to work hard. Those qualities have guided me more than any carefully designed career plan.

2. You have been at the law-technology crossroads for nearly two decades. Given your experience, how do you ensure your legal thinking and advice keep pace with rapidly evolving technologies faster than the law itself?

A lawyer’s role is no longer limited to interpreting the law or giving a client a list of compliance requirements. Businesses usually come to us because a change in law or regulation has created a practical business problem. Our responsibility is to understand that problem and help the client find a workable solution that enables their business.

For a technology lawyer, this begins with understanding the product and the business model. You need to know what the client is trying to build, how the product will operate, who the users and other participants are, and where data, money and responsibility will sit. In that sense, the lawyer often acts as product counsel, examining each feature of the proposed model and identifying legal or regulatory concerns before they become embedded in the product.

The aim should be to help build a resilient business, not one that relies on the narrowest possible reading of a provision. A model should comply with the letter of the law and also respect the purpose for which the law was made. That is especially important in emerging technology, where there may be no specific law or where the law leaves genuine grey areas because it is still catching up. In those situations, we study existing legal principles, regulatory guidance and developments in comparable markets, and then give advice that is practical, balanced and consistent with regulatory intent. Keeping pace therefore requires regular reading and, equally, regular conversations with product, business and compliance teams. Technology changes quickly, and lawyers must be willing to keep learning rather than assume that yesterday’s answer will fit tomorrow’s product.

3. You have navigated complex domains, such as payments, privacy, gaming, and AI. Which has been the most challenging to work with, and how do you use regulatory intent to shape practical and business-friendly solutions?

I tend to see these areas as continuing learning experiences rather than rank one as the most difficult. Each has its own legal framework, commercial realities and legal and regulatory concerns. The first task is to understand each of them. A purely technical interpretation of the law may sometimes appear convenient, but it can produce a fragile business model if it ignores the concern that the government or the regulator is trying to address. One of the most useful skills is the ability to read the law in context: to ask what problem led to the rule, what outcome the regulator expects, and how the client’s model can meet that expectation without losing its business purpose.

Engagement with regulators like Reserve Bank of India (RBI) or the Financial Intelligence Unit—India (FIU-IND) has also been an important part of that learning. Listening carefully to their perspective can help a lawyer give the client more useful advice and develop a solution that is commercially workable while remaining aligned with regulatory expectations. It requires patience and judgment, and I am still learning with every new matter.

4. As law students, we are constantly shifting between opportunities yet often end up feeling exhausted or overwhelmed. Have you ever felt a sense of monotony? Throughout this process, how shall we effectively navigate this journey without feeling overwhelmed or directionless, and best prepare for the professional world beyond law school?

The legal profession has never been static, and changes in business, technology and regulation make that even more apparent today. When I began my career, practice areas such as fintech and data protection did not exist in their present form. If I had committed too early to one narrow idea of my future, I might have missed opportunities that later shaped my career. Hence, the idea is not to feel pressured to choose a permanent specialisation while still at law school. Explore different subjects, internships and ways of practising. Pay attention to how businesses and regulations are changing, but do not choose an area only because it is currently popular. A legal career is long, and clarity usually develops through experience.

At the same time, build a strong foundation. Learn to read carefully, write clearly, research thoroughly and meet commitments. Be ethical, dependable and respectful, particularly when the pressure is high. The right temperament and consistent effort will serve you in any practice area. You do not need to have every step planned; you need to be prepared when an opportunity arrives and willing to learn from it.

5. As a frequent speaker if you had to pen down a memorable moment, what would it be? In your view, what makes a truly impactful speaker, and what’s the one takeaway you always hope your audience carries with them?

It is difficult for me to choose one defining moment. I have been fortunate to speak at renowned technology law, data protection and fintech forums, including the Global Fintech Fest and the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) events. What stays with me is the opportunity to share a stage with people from different disciplines. Business leaders, product teams, compliance professionals and lawyers often see the same issue from very different angles. Listening to those perspectives has taught me as much as speaking has.

An impactful speaker needs to tell a clear story. Legal subjects can become complicated very quickly, so the speaker must give the audience a simple narrative: what has changed, why it matters, and what it means in practice. This does not mean losing the nuance. It means translating the issue into ordinary language and avoiding legal jargon that only lawyers understand. A speaker also needs to listen. Questions and conversations during a session show whether the message is clear and what the audience is genuinely concerned about. If they also feel comfortable asking a better question, the session has achieved something worthwhile.

6. What prompted the development of a UPI-based, QR code payment, or loyalty solution you were involved in, and how did you evaluate the associated legal and regulatory risks to shape it into a compliant and commercially viable offering?

As lawyers, we do not ordinarily decide what product a client should develop, and we should be careful not to claim credit for the innovation. The client brings the product idea and business objective. Our role is to understand the proposal, identify the features that may create legal or regulatory risk, and help the client develop a compliant and commercially workable structure.

That requires us to look at the product as a whole. We examine how it will work for the customer, the roles of the parties involved, how funds and data will move, and which features may trigger legal and regulatory requirements. We then explain the risks, test possible alternatives with the client and consider what may happen after launch, rather than treating compliance as a one-time exercise. Whether the product involves UPI, a QR code or a loyalty programme, useful advice comes from understanding both the regulation and the commercial context. The best outcome is a model that the business can operate and scale without building avoidable legal weakness into the product.

7. With technology scaling at an unprecedented pace, fraud risks are also evolving. Do you think the digital shift has created more opportunities for fraudsters? How can individuals and organisations practically safeguard themselves?

Moving more services online increases convenience, but it also creates a wider surface for cyber threats and fraud. The risk is particularly serious in financial services because banks, non-banking financial companies and payment system operators handle sensitive financial and personal information. Regulation can set minimum security standards, but those alone will not solve the problem. Organisations need security and fraud controls to be part of product design and day-to-day operations. They also need effective monitoring, clear accountability and a tested response when something goes wrong. Customers need simple, repeated guidance that helps them recognise suspicious requests and report them quickly.

No participant can address this alone. Businesses, regulators, industry bodies and law enforcement agencies need to share learning, strengthen common standards, and act promptly against bad actors. Digital payments such as UPI have brought enormous convenience. Maintaining trust in those systems requires continuing investment in security, enforcement and user awareness.

8. With initiatives like Digital India and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, what single digital advancement do you believe could help countries collaborate better across borders and see the “bigger picture”, fostering genuine global collaboration in the tech space?

Digital businesses, users and data flows cross borders, while laws are generally made and enforced within national boundaries. Businesses therefore face overlapping or inconsistent requirements even when they offer the same product in several markets. Closer alignment on core principles, supported by reliable channels for cooperation between regulators, would make cross-border activity easier to govern without requiring every country to adopt identical laws. Indian data protection lawyers already benefit from studying data privacy frameworks such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation and the approaches taken in jurisdictions such as Singapore, while remaining firmly grounded in Indian law.

The need is also visible in areas such as cryptocurrency and virtual digital assets, where activity is global but regulation remains uneven. Better coordination could improve transparency, compliance and the management of systemic risk. The objective should be practical regulatory coherence while allowing each jurisdiction to protect its own public interests.

9. Given the demanding nature of legal practice, how do you maintain a work-life balance while continuing to meet the responsibilities and expectations of your role as a senior partner?

I do not think there is a perfect formula. Law firm work does not always fit within fixed hours. There are demanding matters, tight deadlines and periods when work must take priority. At other times, it is important to make deliberate space for family, rest and interests outside work. That helps you return with better judgment and energy.

The balance also changes at different stages of life and career. In the early years, the profession often requires significant time and effort because you are building skills and trust. Going the extra mile matters, but so does recognising that sustained good work is difficult if you are constantly exhausted. I try to treat balance as something to manage honestly over time, rather than something achieved once and for all.

10. For a young lawyer dreaming of a career in technology and financial regulation, the speed of change can feel overwhelming. What is the one piece of advice you would give them, and do you believe AI will fundamentally replace certain aspects of legal practice, or will it primarily augment the work of lawyers?

Start with the fundamentals of law. Regulations will change, new business models will emerge and today’s specialist knowledge may become dated. The ability to read a provision carefully, understand legal principles, research properly, write clearly and exercise sound judgment will remain valuable. There is no checklist or shortcut that makes someone a fintech or technology lawyer. The practice is built through steady work, curiosity and experience.

Use the early years to explore. Learn from seniors, mentors and peers, understand how different organisations and law firms work, and stay informed about changes in business as well as law. Do not rush to define your final specialisation. Be ready to give your best when an opportunity appears, even if it was not part of your original plan.

Artificial intelligence (AI) will certainly change the practice of law. It can help lawyers find, organise and review information more efficiently, and some routine tasks may become automated. But information is not the same as legal advice. Clients still need judgment, context, ethical responsibility and the ability to apply the law to an uncertain real-world problem. Young lawyers should learn to use AI thoughtfully, verify its output, and protect the confidentiality of clients. Used well, it can support a lawyer’s work, but it does not remove the need to become a good lawyer in the first place.

1. Senior Partner, AZB & Partners.

2. EBC-SCC Online Student Ambassador, KIIT School of Law, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Interviewee: Rohan Bagai<a id="fnref1" href="#fn1" title="1.
