The transition from law school to professional life is rarely a straightforward one. A law degree opens doors to litigation, corporate practice, public policy, judicial services, in-house counsel, academia and several other fields, yet students often have limited opportunities to understand what these careers actually entail. Addressing this gap, the IDIA Odisha Chapter, National Law University Odisha, organised Navigating Law: National Legal Careers Bootcamp, a two-day online programme held on 26 and 27 September 2026.<\/p>\n

The Bootcamp was conceived around a simple but important premise: career decisions become more meaningful when students hear directly from people who have navigated these paths themselves. Across the two days, eight speakers from varied professional backgrounds discussed not only their respective fields, but also the skills, choices, uncertainties and realities that accompany them.<\/p>\n

Day One: Understanding the Many Directions a Law Degree Can Take<\/p>\n

The first day opened with Mandar Prakhar, Research Fellow at the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, who spoke on research and public policy. His session moved beyond the conventional understanding of policy as simply government decision-making. He explained public policy as a framework of laws, rules and regulations aimed at improving governance, emphasising that laws do not simply appear in their final form. They can originate in ministerial initiatives, judicial precedents, committee reports or public movements.<\/p>\n

He introduced students to the policy cycle, beginning with identifying a problem, examining existing legal gaps and comparative approaches, developing possible solutions, drafting legislation and eventually implementing and evaluating it. He also distinguished between different avenues within public policy, including direct government engagement, independent research and public-facing work, and advisory work for corporate entities.<\/p>\n

A particularly significant part of the discussion concerned the skills required for policy work. Mandar emphasised the importance of being comfortable with legislation, gathering evidence, developing structured reasoning and communicating ideas clearly. He also highlighted the need to approach policy questions from the perspective of different stakeholders, including citizens, governments and businesses.<\/p>\n

The second session shifted to the corporate law firm environment, with Srilagna Dash, Associate in the Private Equity and M&A practice at Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas. Speaking from the perspective of a recent law graduate who had herself transitioned into corporate practice, Srilagna challenged several assumptions students commonly make about law firms.<\/p>\n

Her session explored the structure of law firms, recruitment through campus placements and internships, and the importance of making meaningful use of internships. Rather than treating an internship as merely a line on a CV, she encouraged students to be interactive, curious and willing to build professional relationships across different levels of a firm.<\/p>\n

Her own journey was particularly instructive. Initially interested in litigation, she had been hesitant about corporate law because of its reputation for being demanding and leaving little room for personal life. Her experience during internships eventually changed that perception. This became part of her larger message to students: do not choose a practice area based solely on its reputation. Instead, explore different fields before deciding what genuinely suits you. She advised students in their first and second years to experiment with different areas of law and gradually narrow their focus during the later years of law school.<\/p>\n

The third session, led by Suvanwesh Das, Associate at Argus Partners, provided a more detailed look at general corporate practice, M&A, private equity and regulatory work. His session also introduced students to an increasingly important question in contemporary legal practice: the effect of artificial intelligence on entry-level legal work.<\/p>\n

Suvanwesh explained that internships provide students with an understanding of the practical functioning of a law firm, while also stressing that lawyers need to understand the business side of legal practice. Associates are not merely legal researchers. They work in an environment where clients, commercial objectives and business development matter. Taking ownership of work and treating the client’s interests as one’s own, he suggested, can significantly affect professional growth.<\/p>\n

His discussion of AI was particularly candid. Tasks that traditionally formed part of junior-level work, such as proofreading, first-pass document review and redaction, can increasingly be completed by AI tools in a fraction of the time. Yet, rather than presenting this solely as a threat, he identified the areas where human lawyers continue to hold value: professional judgment, research ability, accountability and relationship-building.<\/p>\n

For interns, his expectations were equally practical: understand where to look for an answer even when the answer itself is unknown, take ownership of mistakes, ask questions early, develop strong proofreading skills, protect client confidentiality and respect deadlines. His message was perhaps best captured by his advice to learn how to “digest boring things fast.”<\/p>\n

The first day’s final session featured Dr Shrabani Acharya, former Civil Judge in the Odisha Judicial Service, lawyer and legal academic, who spoke about judiciary and administrative services. Drawing from her own experience of qualifying for the Odisha Judicial Service and subsequently moving towards teaching, research and legal practice, she provided students with a practical overview of preparing for judicial services.<\/p>\n

Her session dealt with building an appropriate profile for judicial services, preparing for the interview stage, choosing subjects strategically and developing judgment-writing skills. She also emphasised that students need not necessarily excel in every conventional law-school activity. For those less inclined towards mooting, strong performance in journals and academic writing can also contribute meaningfully to their profile.<\/p>\n

She further discussed the importance of statutory reading, subject planning and time management, with particular attention to compulsory subjects such as criminal procedure, evidence and civil procedure. Her emphasis on judgment writing and regular review of one’s mistakes offered students a practical method of preparing rather than simply accumulating study material. The session also highlighted something often overlooked in discussions about competitive examinations: sustaining one’s physical and mental health throughout the process.<\/p>\n

Day Two: Beyond Conventional Legal Practice<\/p>\n

The second day continued the Bootcamp’s exploration of diverse professional trajectories, beginning with Dikshya Debipya Panda, In-house Counsel at the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), who spoke about in-house legal practice.<\/p>\n

Dikshya’s experience spans litigation and stressed asset management in a public-sector financial institution. Her work includes matters before the NCLT, NCLAT, Supreme Court, High Courts, District Courts and Electricity Tribunals, along with arbitration and proceedings before the Economic Offences Wing. Her role in stressed asset management also involves participating in Committee of Creditors meetings, providing legal inputs on commercial decisions and undertaking related drafting.<\/p>\n

One of the central distinctions she drew was between working at a law firm and working in-house. While a law-firm lawyer primarily occupies an advisory role, an in-house lawyer participates directly in organisational decision-making. The task is therefore not simply to identify what the law permits, but to determine what decision best serves the organisation while remaining legally compliant.<\/p>\n

She also challenged the perception that in-house counsel primarily perform paperwork. Her account demonstrated that the role requires communication, critical reasoning, commercial awareness and the ability to work with professionals who may have little or no legal background. Her repeated emphasis on understanding numbers and commercial considerations was a useful reminder that legal practice does not operate in isolation from business realities.<\/p>\n

The second session featured Ritesh Patnaik, Advocate practising at the High Court of Orissa, who provided students with an expansive understanding of litigation as a career.<\/p>\n

Rather than beginning with courtroom arguments, Ritesh challenged the common perception that litigation is primarily about standing before a judge and making submissions. He explained that oral advocacy is one of the later stages of a much larger process involving understanding the client’s problem, identifying the legal wrong, researching applicable law, preparing pleadings, filing proceedings and considering alternative dispute resolution before eventually reaching arguments and execution.<\/p>\n

His discussion also focused heavily on the importance of reading. He encouraged students to read statutes closely and develop their own understanding before turning to AI tools. In particular, he argued that drafting is itself a thinking exercise and that students should produce at least one draft independently before using AI assistance. For aspiring litigators, he recommended participating in moots and debates, taking opportunities to speak and becoming comfortable with the uncertainty and pressure of arguing before a bench.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the most realistic part of the session was his discussion of the long-term nature of litigation. Unlike careers where professional progression may appear comparatively structured, litigation can take five to ten years to establish oneself, with the peak of the profession often arriving much later. He emphasised that the early years should be focused on learning, research, drafting and becoming dependable. Over time, that reliability develops into responsibility and, eventually, professional reputation.<\/p>\n

The third session introduced students to public policy through the LAMP Fellowship, with Madhulika Tripathy, a public policy professional at The Quantum Hub and former LAMP Fellow. She explained that the fellowship involves working with a Member of Parliament for approximately nine months and supporting the parliamentary process through research, presentations, questions, committee work and legislative drafting.<\/p>\n

Drawing from her own experience, Madhulika described the fellowship as an opportunity to observe how laws are actually shaped. Committee meetings bring together different stakeholders whose interests must be evaluated before legislative or policy decisions are taken. She also discussed the fellow’s role in drafting bills, undertaking research and understanding the processes through which ideas move towards formal policy.<\/p>\n

Her discussion also distinguished legal research from policy recommendations. While research involves gathering and understanding information, policy recommendations require drawing inferences from that research and using them to propose solutions. She encouraged students to remain curious about why laws are framed in particular ways and to develop research experience through university organisations, internships and other initiatives.<\/p>\n

The Bootcamp concluded with Mohit Chand, who spoke about pursuing an LLM abroad. His session was particularly useful for students who often approach postgraduate applications by beginning with university rankings. His advice was to reverse that process: first identify the area of law one wishes to pursue, determine how the degree will be used, and only then select universities that offer suitable programmes.<\/p>\n

He discussed different destinations, including the United States, United Kingdom and European countries, while emphasising that rankings alone should not determine the choice of university. Students were encouraged to examine course modules, faculty, research centres, alumni networks and opportunities for professional exposure. He also recommended creating a structured list of ambitious, realistic and safe universities and applying to approximately six to ten institutions.<\/p>\n

A significant part of the session focused on the CV and Statement of Purpose. Mohit explained that universities assess applications holistically, considering academics alongside research, internships, positions of responsibility and other experiences. The SOP, however, becomes particularly important because it gives applicants the opportunity to explain their academic identity, interest in a particular field, reasons for choosing a university and future plans.<\/p>\n

He also addressed scholarships, recommendation letters and application timelines, advising students to begin serious preparation towards the later part of their fourth year. Importantly, he cautioned against assuming that an LLM guarantees employment and encouraged applicants to consider factors beyond academics, including the political and safety environment of their intended destination.<\/p>\n

More Than a Career Bootcamp<\/p>\n

Across its two days, Navigating Law did more than present a catalogue of career options. The sessions repeatedly returned to a common idea: there is no single template for building a successful legal career.<\/p>\n

For one speaker, success meant learning to understand the commercial realities of an organisation. For another, it meant developing the patience and professional credibility required for litigation. For others, it meant understanding how legislation is created, building a coherent academic profile for an international degree, or preparing systematically for judicial services.<\/p>\n

What connected these different journeys was the importance of curiosity, adaptability, reading, communication and a willingness to learn beyond the boundaries of the law-school curriculum.<\/p>\n

For students still trying to determine where their own legal education might lead, perhaps the most valuable lesson of the Bootcamp was not a particular career recommendation. It was the opportunity to see that the legal profession is considerably broader, more demanding and more varied than it may appear from a classroom.<\/p>\n
