{"id":397939,"date":"2026-10-06T13:00:22","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T07:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/?p=397939"},"modified":"2026-10-06T12:50:27","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T07:20:27","slug":"president-appoints-acting-chief-justices-delhi-gujarat-telangana-high-courts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2026\/10\/06\/president-appoints-acting-chief-justices-delhi-gujarat-telangana-high-courts\/","title":{"rendered":"President appoints Justices Nitin Wasudeo Sambre, Manash Ranjan Pathak and Puthichira Sam Koshy as Acting Chief Justices of 3 High Courts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Ministry of Law and Justice, Department of Justice (Appointments Division), Government of India<\/span>, notified the appointment of three Judges to discharge the duties of Chief Justices of the Delhi, Gujarat and Telangana High Courts through a notification dated <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">5 October 2026<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The appointments have been made under <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0001574965\" target=\"_blank\">223<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0002726967\" target=\"_blank\">Constitution of India<\/a><\/span> and will take effect from the respective dates on which the incumbent Chief Justices relinquish charge following their elevation to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre<\/span>, Judge of the Delhi High Court, has been appointed to perform the duties of the office of Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court after <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya<\/span> relinquishes charge consequent upon his elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/13_President-appoints-Justices-Nitin-Wasudeo-Sambre_1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"511\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Justice Sambre joined the Delhi High Court on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">21 July 2025<\/span>, following his transfer from the Bombay High Court. He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in January 2014 and became a permanent Judge in March 2016. Before his elevation, he practised in civil, writ and criminal matters and served as Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor. He also served as Secretary of the High Court Bar Association, Nagpur.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak<\/span>, Judge of the Gujarat High Court, has been appointed to perform the duties of the office of Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court after <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Justice Sunita Agarwal<\/span> relinquishes charge consequent upon her elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/13_President-appoints-Justices-Nitin-Wasudeo-Sambre_2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"543\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Justice Pathak was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">22 May 2013<\/span> and became a permanent Judge on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">12 November 2018<\/span>. He was subsequently transferred to the Orissa High Court, where he served from July 2025, and then to the Gujarat High Court, where he assumed charge on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">14 September 2026<\/span>. He had practised primarily in civil, constitutional, land acquisition and service matters and had also served as Standing Counsel for the State of Tripura and the Government of Assam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Justice Puthichira Sam Koshy<\/span>, Judge of the Telangana High Court, has been appointed as <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Acting Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court<\/span> from the date on which <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh<\/span> relinquishes charge consequent upon his elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/13_President-appoints-Justices-Nitin-Wasudeo-Sambre_3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"515\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Justice Koshy was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">16 September 2013<\/span> and became a permanent Judge on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">8 March 2016<\/span>.
