{"id":394660,"date":"2026-08-31T13:00:02","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T07:30:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/?p=394660"},"modified":"2026-08-31T14:24:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T08:54:19","slug":"himachal-pradesh-high-court-judges-appointed-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2026\/08\/31\/himachal-pradesh-high-court-judges-appointed-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"President appoints Chirag Bhanu Singh as Himachal Pradesh HC Judge; Bhupesh Sharma, Yogesh Jaswal named Additional Judges"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The Ministry of Law and Justice, Department of Justice (Appointments Division), has notified the appointment of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Chirag Bhanu Singh as a Judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court<\/span> and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Bhupesh Sharma and Yogesh Jaswal as Additional Judges of the Himachal Pradesh High Court<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The appointments were notified on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">27 August 2026<\/span> by the Government of India. The notification states that the appointments have been made by the President in exercise of the powers conferred under <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0001574957\" target=\"_blank\">217(1)<\/a><a id=\"fnref1\" href=\"#fn1\" title=\"1. Appointment of a Judge of a High Court\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> and Article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0001574966\" target=\"_blank\">224<\/a><a id=\"fnref2\" href=\"#fn2\" title=\"2. Appointment of additional and acting Judges\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0002726967\" target=\"_blank\">Constitution of India<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">While Chirag Bhanu Singh&#8217;s appointment takes effect from the date he assumes charge, Bhupesh Sharma and Yogesh Jaswal have been appointed as Additional Judges for a period of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">two years<\/span>, also with effect from the respective dates on which they assume charge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Justice Chirag Bhanu Singh&#8217;s earlier elevation proposal<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Chirag Bhanu Singh had first been recommended for appointment as a Judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">December 2022<\/span>, along with Arvind Malhotra, by the Himachal Pradesh High Court Collegium.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The Supreme Court Collegium considered their names in <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">July 2023 but deferred the proposal<\/span>. In January 2024, it directed that the proposal be reconsidered by the High Court Collegium.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The matter subsequently reached the Supreme Court. On <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">6 September 2024<\/span>, the Supreme Court in <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Chirag Bhanu Singh<\/span> v. <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">High Court of H.P.<\/span>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink\/ZJ792Inq\" target=\"_blank\">(2024) 9 SCC 41<\/a>, directed that the proposal be reconsidered by the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">High Court Collegium as a whole<\/span>, rather than by the Chief Justice alone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The Supreme Court Collegium eventually approved <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Chirag Bhanu Singh&#8217;s<\/span> name, along with<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> Bhupesh Sharma and Yogesh Jaswal<\/span>, for appointment to the Himachal Pradesh High Court on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2 June 2026<\/span>.
