{"id":391802,"date":"2026-07-29T14:00:03","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T08:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/?p=391802"},"modified":"2026-07-29T14:33:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T09:03:06","slug":"sc-bans-social-media-sharing-court-video-recordings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2026\/07\/29\/sc-bans-social-media-sharing-court-video-recordings\/","title":{"rendered":"Inside the Order: Why and How the Supreme Court Curbed, Clipped, Out-of-Context Court Videos on Social Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Disclaimer:<\/span> This has been reported after the availability of the order of the Court and not on media reports so as to give an accurate report to our readers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Supreme Court:<\/span> While considering this writ petition raising concerns over misuse of video conferencing and live-streaming facility in judicial proceedings, especially selective circulation of out-of-context, cropped and misleading clips from court hearings on digital platforms, the three-Judge Bench of Surya Kant, CJI, Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, JJ., gave an <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">interim direction<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">prohibiting<\/span> extraction, dissemination, monetisation, posting, re-posting, uploading, transmitting, modification, storing, or hosting of the audio-video recordings of the judicial proceedings on social media or any other digital platforms <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">without prior permission<\/span> of the Secretary General of the Supreme Court or the Registrar Generals of the jurisdictional High Courts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The Court however, clarified that the aforesaid interim order shall have no bearing on the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">reporting of court proceedings by recognised news outlets<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Also read:<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2021\/06\/10\/sc-releases-draft-model-rules-for-live-streaming-and-recording-of-proceedings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SC releases draft model rules for Live streaming and recording of proceedings<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The instant writ petition raised grave concerns over growing misuse of video-conferenced judicial proceedings and the selective circulation of clipped, edited, and decontextualised portions of court hearings on social media platforms. The petitioner pointed out that such out-of-context sharing of court hearings on digital platforms creates climate of hostility, misinformation, and deliberate sensationalism around judicial proceedings, thereby undermining public confidence in the administration of justice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Also read:<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2021\/06\/04\/live-streaming-n-courts-accessible-affordable-and-accountable-judiciary-part-i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Streaming N\u2019 Courts: Accessible, Affordable and Accountable Judiciary [PART I]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Hearing the petition, the Court impleaded the 25 High Courts as respondents. The Court further impleaded the digital platforms, namely, LinkedIn, Google, YouTube and X Corp and Meta Platforms Inc. including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The Court further directed the High Courts to submit status reports with respect to the adoption of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2021\/06\/10\/sc-releases-draft-model-rules-for-live-streaming-and-recording-of-proceedings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Model Rules for live streaming and recording of court proceedings<\/a> circulated by the Supreme Court.
