3%;\">On 10 July 2026, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued a clarification regarding the functioning of the designated <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1600 and 140 number series<\/span>, noting that certain media reports could lead to misinformation or misinterpretation of their operation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Key Clarifications:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\">\n<li>\n<p>TRAI has clarified the regulatory position governing the designated 1600 and 140 number series.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The 1600xx series<\/span> has been designated for:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>\n<p>Service and transactional calls made by regulated entities in the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">BFSI sector<\/span>; and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Government-to-citizen<\/span> communications by government entities.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The BFSI entities covered under the framework include entities regulated by:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>\n<p>Reserve Bank of India (RBI);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI); and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>TRAI stated that the objective behind the dedicated 1600 series is to make important service and transactional communications more trustworthy for customers and citizens.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/Members\/NoteView.aspx?enc=SlRYVC05MDAxMDgwNzQ0JiYmJiY0MCYmJiYmU2VhcmNoUGFnZSN1bmRlZmluZWQ=\" target=\"_blank\">Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2010<\/a> (TCCCPR), calls originating from the 1600 series cannot be tagged, blocked or filtered.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The 140xx series<\/span> has been designated for <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">promotional calls by entities across all sectors<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Entities intending to make promotional calls through 140 series numbers are required to register with Telecom Service Providers under the TCCCPR framework and comply with the applicable regulations.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Customers can choose to receive or block promotional calls from the 140 series by registering their preferences on the Do Not Disturb (DND) Registry.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Customers who have blocked a particular sector or all sectors on the DND Registry will not receive promotional calls from 140 series numbers belonging to those blocked sectors.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>DND preferences can be registered through multiple channels, including the TRAI DND App.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>TRAI has clarified that calls originating from 140 series numbers cannot be tagged or filtered, except where blocking is carried out in accordance with DND preferences registered by customers.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">According to TRAI, tagging of 140 series calls could mislead customers who have otherwise
