On 21 June 2026, India Very Young Arbitration Practitioners (IVYAP) and The Arbitration Event Tracker (TAET), in collaboration with SCC Times as Media Partner, organized a virtual panel discussion titled Building Careers at International Arbitral Institutions: Perspectives from India-Qualified Lawyers as part of TAET’s Early-Career in Arbitration Series.<\/p>\n

The panel discussion featured insights from Arpan Banerjee (Deputy Counsel, ICC International Court of Arbitration), Avni Sharma (Assistant Legal Counsel, Permanent Court of Arbitration), Shivam Patanjali (Counsel & Team Lead, Singapore International Arbitration Centre) and Vishnu Menon (Tribunal Secretary & former Senior International Case Counsel, Asian International Arbitration Centre) and was moderated by Natasha Singh (Judicial Law Clerk, Supreme Court of India; Executive Committee, IVYAP). The discussion attracted approximately eighty attendees, both from India and abroad, and comprehensively explored pathways to careers at international arbitral institutions.<\/p>\n

The speakers began by reflecting on how they first became interested in international arbitration and the professional decisions that eventually led them to their institutional roles. Mr. Patanjali and Mr. Menon also spoke specifically to the value of their judicial clerkships, describing the wide-ranging exposure to matters across the court’s roster (including arbitration matters), and the valuable and transferable skillsets that arose from working in such close proximity to decisionmakers. Mr. Menon also noted the practical value of a reference from a judge familiar with one’s work, which proved helpful in obtaining his LL.M. in International Dispute Settlement and Arbitration from Leiden University.<\/p>\n

Naturally, the discussion then turned to one of the questions most frequently asked by Indian students and practitioners: the importance of pursuing a foreign LL.M. to a career in international arbitration, along with the related issue of securing funding and scholarships. The speakers agreed that a Master’s degree could not, by itself, be a ‘golden ticket’. Candidates had to articulate their academic & professional objectives as well as weigh their personal & financial considerations before moving abroad to pursue further studies.<\/p>\n

Mr. Banerjee, who attended Sciences Po on the Charpak Scholarship, suggested keeping in mind the financial investment involved in pursuing an LL.M and, when applying for scholarships, carefully reviewing each scholarship’s specific requirements based on what the funders were looking for in applicants. Ms. Sharma, drawing from her experience attending Georgetown University as an International Arbitration Scholar, echoed this sentiment. She added that pursuing an LL.M. after five years of practice in India allowed her to situate her existing experience within a broader international context. She also advised India-qualified lawyers not to downplay their domestic work-experience and rather to foreground it, given that young lawyers in India often receive substantial responsibility and exposure at relatively early stages of their careers.<\/p>\n

All the speakers agreed that the value of an LL.M. ultimately depends on how effectively candidates leverage the opportunities it provides, whether through exposure to international cohorts, internships, professional networks, or global recruitment markets.<\/p>\n

The audience was particularly curious about how to secure such highly competitive positions at international arbitral institutions, especially when competing against applicants from around the world. On this point, Mr. Patanjali reflected that there was no linear pathway to such a career; rather selection processes favoured practitioners who were able to effectively leverage the mentors, experiences, and chances available to them. He gave the example of how he was introduced to the work of SIAC during his Master’s program at Osgoode Hall Law School, leading to his appointment. He also shared his perspective that continued professional growth within the institution depended on building trust with stakeholders and continually learning and evolving on the job.<\/p>\n

To encounter more such opportunities, Ms. Sharma pointed to a resource, How to Break into International Arbitration, produced by the Georgetown International Arbitration Society, of which she had served as President during her postgraduate studies. Separately, on commonly underrated skills, the panel unanimously identified written advocacy, particularly the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly in writing.<\/p>\n

The discussion then moved to the realities of institutional arbitration practice. One notable theme was the unique ‘bird’s-eye’ view lawyers in such institutions enjoy across a wide range of disputes. Mr. Patanjali described institutional practice as providing a “front-row seat” to dispute-resolution across multiple industries and sectors. Mr. Banerjee similarly reflected on it as an opportunity to closely observe high-quality advocacy and recurring legal issues across jurisdictions, all operating in what he described as the unique common language of international arbitration.<\/p>\n

Mr. Menon also discussed opportunities that arise beyond traditional case administration, drawing on his experience working in the joint task-force between AIAC and the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department of Malaysia on amendments to Malaysia’s Arbitration Act. He stated that these diverse experiences greatly expanded both his exposure and expertise, and encouraged young practitioners to remain open to such unexpected opportunities. He pointed to several practical ways of doing this, including joining young practitioner networks (such as those affiliated with arbitral institutions, or IVYAP), publishing articles, and even securing tribunal secretary appointments by directly approaching arbitrators and offering assistance.<\/p>\n

Concluding the discussion, Natasha Singh, who organized and moderated the event on behalf of IVYAP, noted that most topics explored during the session could themselves form the subject of standalone discussions. She expressed IVYAP’s intention to continue developing similar programming for students and young practitioners interested in international arbitration.<\/p>\n

Overall, the attendees left with a greater appreciation of the importance of proactively pursuing opportunities, cultivating professional relationships, and continuously building skills and experience. A recurring theme throughout the session was that careers in international arbitration are rarely straightforward; rather, they are often shaped by a willingness to learn, adapt, and make the most of opportunities as they arise.<\/p>\n
