Referring to leading commercial courts and arbitral institutions across jurisdictions, he noted that despite their continued prominence, concerns relating to cost, complexity and delay persisted.

According to Sir Geoffrey, the emergence of highly capable large language models since late 2022 represents one of the most significant developments affecting legal practice. He suggested that AI tools are increasingly capable of providing legal information and assistance to businesses and consumers, fundamentally altering expectations regarding access to legal services.

Sir Geoffrey further identified changing societal attitudes as a major challenge for legal institutions. Social media, he said, had reshaped expectations and values, resulting in shorter attention spans and diminishing deference towards traditional institutions and established authority.

Highlighting broader geopolitical trends, Sir Geoffrey pointed to increasing nationalism, populism and political polarisation as developments that could affect international cooperation and dispute resolution. He also noted the growing role of legal systems in addressing environmental challenges, including climate change, renewable energy transitions and population displacement.

Turning to the digital economy, Sir Geoffrey remarked that digital trading and digital assets were increasingly becoming part of international commercial activity, although mainstream adoption remained limited. He stressed that legal and regulatory frameworks would need to evolve to support these developments effectively.

One of the central themes of the address concerned the relationship between artificial intelligence and private law systems. Sir Geoffrey argued that debates concerning digital sovereignty were not solely technological in nature but were also connected to the future relevance of established legal systems. In his view, the competition to develop national AI capabilities was simultaneously a competition to preserve the influence of legal frameworks that have historically governed international trade and finance.

Addressing the future of dispute resolution, Sir Geoffrey suggested that the legal community should accept that these developments were unlikely to be reversed. “The world will not go backwards,” he remarked, adding that courts and arbitral institutions should embrace technological innovation to improve efficiency, reduce costs and simplify procedures.

Sir Geoffrey emphasised that trust remained the foundation of dispute resolution. According to him, maintaining that trust would require not only confidence in judges, lawyers and arbitrators, but also confidence in the technological systems increasingly used to support legal processes.

Warning against unnecessary procedural complexity, Sir Geoffrey observed that technology offered opportunities for economy and simplification that should be embraced rather than resisted. He also called for greater international alignment of private law and regulatory frameworks to facilitate digital trade and ensure legal certainty across jurisdictions.

On the question of the rule of law, Sir Geoffrey suggested that lawyers needed to do more to explain the importance of legal institutions to society. He remarked that law underpins international trade, markets and democratic governance, adding that legal professionals should be prepared to articulate the continuing importance of those foundations in a changing world.

Concluding with reflections on nearly five decades in the legal profession, Sir Geoffrey recalled the transition from paper-based practice and manual typewriters to entirely paperless working environments. While acknowledging that change often requires effort and adaptation, he maintained that resisting technological progress would ultimately undermine the profession’s ability to serve the public effectively.

Encouraging legal professionals to embrace innovation, Sir Geoffrey stated that the future of international dispute resolution depended on the profession’s willingness to adapt to the needs of modern society while continuing to provide trusted and effective mechanisms for resolving disputes.

As the LIDW 2026 Main Conference came to a close, Sir Geoffrey Vos’ concluding reflections brought together many of the themes that had resonated throughout the week. Technological disruption, evolving global markets, access to justice, digital sovereignty, and the enduring importance of the rule of law. His address served not only as a call for adaptation but also as a reminder that the future of international dispute resolution will depend upon the legal community’s willingness to innovate while preserving the trust and legal foundations upon which global commerce and democratic societies continue to rely.

Report prepared by SCC
