Initially, the Constitution envisaged a maximum of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">seven judges<\/span> apart from the CJI, leaving scope for expansion through legislation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">To operationalize this provision, the Parliament enacted the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink\/mAA3Lhft\" target=\"_blank\">Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956<\/a><\/span>, which initially fixed the maximum number of judges (excluding the CJI) at <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">10<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Although the sanctioned strength was increased over time, the working strength of the Supreme Court was temporarily restricted to <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">15 judges until 1979<\/span>. This limitation was lifted at the request of the CJI, allowing full utilization of the sanctioned strength.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The judge strength of the Supreme Court was last enhanced from <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">30 to 33 judges<\/span> (excluding CJI) through the<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> <a
