<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Election Commission of India<\/span> (ECI) has circulated instructions reiterating that all stakeholders must ensure responsible and ethical use of social media and digital platforms during the ongoing General Elections and bye-elections.<\/p>\n<h2>Key takeaways:<\/h2>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\">\n<li>\n<p>The Election Commission stressed strict compliance under the provisions of:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink\/KOQqB7O2\" target=\"_blank\">Information Technology Act, 2000<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink\/HK8Nr56B\" target=\"_blank\">Information Technology Rules, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eci.gov.in\/mcc\/\" target=\"_blank\">Model Code of Conduct (MCC).<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The ECI has instructed social media platforms to take action on misleading, unlawful, or AI-generated\/manipulated content <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">within three hours<\/span> of it being reported, to curb misinformation and protect the election process.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Political parties, candidates, and campaigners have been directed to use emerging technologies responsibly and transparently.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>All AI-generated or digitally altered campaign material must carry clear labels such as <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">&#8216;AI-Generated,&#8217; &#8216;Digitally Enhanced,&#8217; or &#8216;Synthetic Content,&#8217;<\/span> along with details of its source, to ensure voter awareness.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>During the Assembly elections in <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and West Bengal<\/span>, social media content violating the MCC, affecting law and order, or spreading false information about elections is being closely monitored and acted upon by <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">State IT Nodal Officers<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Since the election announcement on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">15 March 2026<\/span>, more than <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">11,000 social media posts and URLs<\/span> have been acted upon through removals, FIRs, clarifications, and rebuttals.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The Commission reaffirmed <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Section <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0001558681\" target=\"_blank\">126<\/a> of the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink\/j1CPWOTy\" target=\"_blank\">Representation of the People Act, 1951<\/a>, which bars election-related content in polling areas during the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">48-hour silence period<\/span>, and directed all media platforms to strictly comply.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">MCC violations can be reported through <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">the C-Vigil module on ECINET<\/span>, through which <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">3,23,099 complaints<\/span> were lodged between 15 March and 19 April 2026, with <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">96.01%<\/span> resolved within the stipulated <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">100-minute timeframe<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p
