The University is located at Napaam, about 15 km east of Tezpur town in the Sonitpur District of Assam. The serene and green University campus of about 262 acres provides the best of the ambience including modern infrastructure conducive for teaching-learning and dedicated research.

The academic programmes offered in the University have a distinct focus on science, technology, management, humanities, and social sciences, reflecting the objective of the University. At present, the University offers several programmes on under-graduate degree/diploma/certificate levels, integrated programmes, post-graduate degree/diploma programmes and Doctor of Philosophy degree in various disciplines. In its three-decade long existence, the University has engaged itself in the process of capacity building, both in terms of infrastructure and human resource development. The University has mounted tremendous efforts in developing itself into a modern University incorporating all elements from the contemporary scientific and socio-cultural milieu.

ABOUT DEPARTMENT OF LAW, TEZPUR UNIVERSITY

The Department of Law was established in 2017 under the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Department of Law aims to produce distinguished legal professionals committed to teaching, judiciary, law making, law enforcement, and societal welfare. The Department envisions shaping students into responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to society.

The Department presently offers LL.M. and Ph.D. programmes. The programmes demonstrate the Department’s commitment to enhancing its role as a vibrant centre for legal education and research. The primary objective of the Department of Law is to establish itself as a dynamic hub for legal education and research, providing aspiring legal professionals with the opportunities and resources necessary to excel in the legal field.

CONCEPT NOTE

Gender justice is about dismantling structural inequalities embedded within social, economic, cultural, and legal systems. The concept of gender justice has often been limited to women-centric welfare approaches. The contemporary realities demand a more expansive framework. It recognises gender as relational, intersectional, and deeply influenced by power structures such as caste, class, religion, age, disability, sexuality, and access to resources. It is strongly related to the concept of social transformation. It requires a shift from formal equality to substantive justice. Constitutional guarantees of equality, dignity, and non-discrimination provide a normative foundation for this transformation, yet their realisation remains uneven.

In the contemporary world, gender justice is also shaped by rapid technological, environmental, and economic changes. Digital spaces have created new opportunities and have simultaneously enabled different forms of gender-based violence. Similarly, climate change, environmental degradation, and displacement disproportionately affect women, indigenous communities, and gender minorities. It has become impossible to separate gender justice from environmental and social justice. Labour precarity in the gig economy, migration, and ageing populations further expose gendered vulnerabilities.

Gender-based violence remains one of the most visible manifestations of gender injustice in different age groups in varied settings. Addressing such violence is essential for transforming societal attitudes and power relations. Hence, this national seminar seeks to create a critical interdisciplinary platform to examine gender justice as a transformative force. It aims to deepen understanding, encourage dialogue, and contribute to knowledge that supports inclusive and sustainable social transformation.

OBJECTIVES

<ul style="list-style-type: equality.

Exploring intersectional experiences shaped by caste, class, age, disability, etc.

Encouraging discussion on emerging issues like digital spaces, climate change, and displacement through the lens of gender justice.

Providing a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue among law, social
