Recognising the growing need for accessible and comprehensive mental healthcare, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare<\/span> implemented the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP)<\/span>, which also includes targeted support for postpartum mothers<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Key Highlights:<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. \n

    The programme places strong emphasis on community-based care, primary healthcare integration, maternal mental health, and technology-enabled support systems.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    A key pillar of NMHP is the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP)<\/span>, which has now been sanctioned in 767 districts<\/span> nationwide.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    DMHP services include outpatient care, counselling, treatment for severe mental illness, free medicines, outreach services and ambulance support.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    To enhance mental healthcare at the primary level, over 1.83 lakh<\/span> Sub Health Centres (SHCs) and PHCs have been upgraded into Ayushman Arogya Mandirs.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    Guidelines and training manuals on Mental, Neurological and Substance Use<\/span> (MNS) disorders have been issued to help frontline workers identify, manage and refer mental health cases.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  6. \n

    India has 47 Government-run mental hospitals<\/span>, including NIMHANS (Bengaluru), CIP (Ranchi) and LGBRIMH (Tezpur).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  7. \n

    The Tele MANAS service<\/span>, launched in October 2022, provides free mental health counselling across India. As of March 2026, it has handled over 34.34 lakh calls.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  8. \n

    The Tele MANAS mobile app and video consultation<\/span> services, launched in 2024, have further improved access to care.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Addressing Postpartum Mental Health<\/h2>\n
      \n
    • \n

      Maternal mental health has received special attention under the programme.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      As per the National Mental Health Survey (2016)<\/span>, 5.72% of adult women<\/span> suffer from depressive disorders.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Under the National Health Mission<\/span>, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs)<\/span> and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs)<\/span> screen postpartum mothers during six postnatal home visits<\/span> after delivery, including signs of postpartum depression, is assessed.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Mothers identified with mental health concerns are referred to appropriate facilities under the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA)<\/span> and Extended PMSMA<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      ASHAs receive incentives under the Optimization of Postnatal Care Scheme<\/span> for timely identification and referral.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Through NMHP<\/span>, the Government is strengthening mental healthcare with emphasis on early detection, primary level services and maternal mental health<\/span>.
