On 25 February 2026, the Lok Sabha Speaker<\/span>, Om Birla, reconstituted the 3 Member Inquiry Committee<\/span> to investigate allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma, <\/span>Judge, Allahabad High Court.<\/p>\n

The reconstituted committee comprises the following:<\/p>\n

    Justice Shree Chandrashekhar<\/span>, Chief Justice, Bombay High Court<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    B.V. Acharya<\/span>, Senior Advocate, Karnataka High Court<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The Committee is constituted under Section 3(2)<\/a> of the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968<\/a><\/span> which is tasked with conducting a thorough investigation into the fire incident that led to the discovery of ₹500 burnt currency notes at Justice Yashwant Varma<\/span>’s residence. The Committee will submit its report in due course, and until then, the motion for Justice Varma’s removal will remain pending. <\/p>\n

    Background of allegations and Committee formation<\/h3>\n

    On 15 March 2025<\/span>, a fire broke at Justice Yashwant Varma<\/span>’s residence, which led to the discovery of unexplained burnt cash, raising serious suspicions of misconduct. The Supreme Court later publicly disclosed details of the incident, intensifying public concern and prompting calls for accountability. Subsequently, 146 Members of Parliament<\/span> submitted a proposal seeking his removal on grounds linked to the unexplained cash recovery and constitutional provisions. Prior in-house inquiries found the allegations grave enough to trigger formal proceedings, prompting the Lok Sabha Speaker to constitute an inquiry committee. Then on 12 August 2025<\/span>, the 3-member committee was formed to examine the case.<\/p>\n
