{"id":376766,"date":"2026-02-25T16:30:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T11:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/?p=376766"},"modified":"2026-02-25T17:03:35","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T11:33:35","slug":"cabinet-approves-kerala-to-keralam-name-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2026\/02\/25\/cabinet-approves-kerala-to-keralam-name-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Union Cabinet approves renaming of &#8220;Kerala&#8221; to &#8220;Keralam&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<style>\n.animate-charcter{background-image: linear-gradient(-225deg, #231557 0%, #44107a 29%, #ff1361 67%, #fff800 100%); background-size: 200% auto; -webkit-background-clip: text; -webkit-text-fill-color: transparent; animation: textclip 0s linear infinite;}\n@keyframes textclip {to {background-position: 200% center;}}\n<\/style>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">On 24-2-2026, the Union Cabinet has approved the proposal for <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">alteration of name of State of &#8216;Kerala&#8217; as &#8216;Keralam&#8217;<\/span>.&nbsp;Under the provisions of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0001575112\" target=\"_blank\">3<\/a><\/span> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0002726967\" target=\"_blank\">Constitution<\/a>, the Government of Kerala <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">requested the Central Government<\/span> to initiate the process of amending the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0001575321\" target=\"_blank\">First<\/a> Schedule to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0002726967\" target=\"_blank\">Constitution<\/a> to reflect this change.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, on 24-6-2024, the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Legislative Assembly of Kerala<\/span> passed a resolution to change &#8220;Kerala&#8221; to &#8220;Keralam&#8221;, stating:<\/p>\n<p class=\"animate-charcter\" style=\"margin-bottom: 3%; margin-left: 36pt; font-style: italic;\">&#8220;The name of our State is &#8216;Keralam&#8217; in Malayalam Language. States were formed on the basis of language on the 1st day of November, 1956. The Kerala Piravi Day is also on the 1st day of November. Since the time of National Independence Struggle, there has been a strong demand for the formation of United Kerala for the people speaking Malayalam language. But in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0001575321\" target=\"_blank\">First<\/a> Schedule to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0002726967\" target=\"_blank\">Constitution<\/a> the name of our State is recorded as &#8216;Kerala&#8217;. This Assembly unanimously appeal to the Central Government to take urgent steps as per Article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0001575112\" target=\"_blank\">3<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0002726967\" target=\"_blank\">Constitution<\/a> for modifying the name as &#8216;Keralam&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The Ministry of Home Affairs examined the proposal and circulated a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">draft Cabinet Note<\/span> to the Department of Legal Affairs and the Legislative Department for their comments, and both the departments concurred.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Since <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Parliament has the power to alter a state&#8217;s name<\/span>, after this approval, the President will refer the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026<\/span> to Kerala State Assembly for expressing its views, as required under the proviso to Article 3. Once the Assembly&#8217;s views are received, the President will recommend introduction of this Bill in Parliament.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-style: italic;\">Govt approves proposal to change the name of the State from &#8216;Kerala&#8217;
