About the Organiser<\/h3>\n

Established in 1909 under the guidance of Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, the Department of Law, University of Calcutta is one of the oldest and most prestigious legal institutions in the South Asian subcontinent. It remains a leading centre of legal education and scholarship in India.<\/p>\n

The Journal and Seminar Committee (JSC)—a student-run academic body of the Department—is dedicated to fostering legal research, academic writing, and substantive discourse in contemporary jurisprudence.<\/p>\n

About the Blog — Legis Sententia<\/h3>\n

Legis Sententia (Latin for “legal opinion”) is the official undergraduate blog of the Department of Law, University of Calcutta, overseen by its Editorial Board under the JSC. Hosted on Medium, the blog provides an accessible yet academically rigorous platform for law students to publish well-researched, reasoned opinions on legal and allied issues.<\/p>\n

Selected posts receive a unique DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and become part of the permanent Legis Sententia repository maintained by the JSC. There are absolutely no submission, review, or publication fees at any stage. The blog is completely free and open-access.<\/p>\n

Theme \/ Scope<\/h3>\n

This is an open-theme call. Submissions may address any area of law—doctrinal, theoretical, policy-oriented, or interdisciplinary—at domestic, comparative, or international levels, provided that:<\/p>\n

1. The piece demonstrates a clear and substantial nexus with law or legal regulation; and<\/p>\n

2. The analysis goes beyond mere description to offer reasoned argument, critique, or insight.<\/p>\n

Commercial, Corporate and Financial Laws<\/p>\n

Criminal Law and Criminology<\/p>\n

Private Law (Contract, Tort, Property, Family)<\/p>\n

International Law, Diplomacy, Security and allied fields<\/p>\n

Authors are not restricted to a predefined list—if the work is legally grounded, well-argued, and relevant, it fits our scope.<\/p>\n

Eligibility<\/h3>\n

Primary focus: Undergraduate and postgraduate law students enrolled in BCI-recognised institutions in India.<\/p>\n

Additionally: Early-career researchers and practitioners may be considered at the Editorial Board’s discretion, provided the submission aligns with the blog’s undergraduate focus.<\/p>\n

Co-authorship of up to two authors is permitted.<\/p>\n

Submission Categories<\/h3>\n

1. Legal Articles<\/p>\n

Maximum 3,000 words (exclusive of citations).<\/p>\n

In-depth, research-oriented pieces on specific legal questions, case laws, statutory developments, or doctrinal debates.<\/p>\n

2. Editorials<\/p>\n

Maximum 1,500 words (exclusive of citations).<\/p>\n

Concise, opinion-driven pieces on current legal developments, policy questions, or ongoing debates.<\/p>\n

(Word limits are indicative upper caps; brevity with substance is encouraged.)<\/p>\n

Body Font Size: 12 pt<\/p>\n

Citation Font Size: 10 pt<\/p>\n

File Format: Microsoft Word (.doc \/ .docx)<\/p>\n

Body Line Spacing: 1.5<\/p>\n

Citation Line Spacing: 1.0<\/p>\n

Page Margins: 1 inch on all sides<\/p>\n

Citation Style: 20th Edition Harvard Bluebook (or a consistently applied style in line therewith). Footnotes are preferred.<\/p>\n

Review, DOI & Publication<\/h3>\n

1. All submissions are screened for originality and plagiarism. Plagiarised or substantially derivative work will be rejected outright.<\/p>\n

2. Each piece undergoes editorial review by the Legis Sententia Editorial Board, which may:<\/p>\n

Accept the submission;<\/p>\n

Accept subject to minor\/major revisions; or<\/p>\n

Reject the submission.<\/p>\n

3. Accepted and published posts are allotted a unique DOI and indexed in the Department’s official blog archive.<\/p>\n

4. The Editorial Board’s decision is final and binding.<\/p>\n

No fees apply at any stage.<\/p>\n
