Government Law College, Mumbai, in association with the Wildlife Conservation Trust, presents the 7th Wildlife Protection Government Law College National Moot Court Competition, 2025-26. The Wildlife Protection Government Law College National Moot Court Competition is India’s first wildlife conservation-focused Moot Court Competition. This year’s event marks its seventh edition, with a view to creating awareness of the challenges faced by wildlife among law students. The Competition is scheduled to be held offline from 8th to 10th January, 2026 at Government Law College, Mumbai.<\/p>\n

ABOUT THE ORGANISERS:<\/h3>\n

Government<\/span> Law College, Mumbai, established in 1855, is the oldest law college in Asia, a pioneer in legal education – an institution par excellence. The generations of legal luminaries who have been nurtured by this unique institution have made seminal contributions to the evolution of the Indian Legal System. Sir Dinshaw Mulla, Mr. A. A. A. Fyzee and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar have all been the principals of this venerated institution. Former Chief<\/p>\n

Justices of India including Mr. Harilal Kania – the first Chief Justice of India, Mr. P. N. Bhagwati, Mr. S. H. Kapadia, Mr. M. H. Kania and Mr. S. P. Bharucha all began their careers at GLC. The Hon’ble President of India, Her Excellency, Ms. Pratibha Patil, Mr. Soli Sorabjee, Mr. Fali Nariman, Mr. Anil Divan, Mr. T. R. Andhyarujina and Mr. Goolam Vahanvati have all been students of this very institution.<\/p>\n

The Wildlife Protection Government Law College National Moot Court Competition<\/span> is organized in association with the Wildlife Conservation Trust (WCT)<\/span>. The Wildlife Conservation Trust was envisioned to preserve and protect India’s rich natural heritage. Currently, WCT works in and around 170 Protected Areas across 23 states and four Union Territories in the country covering 82% of India’s tiger reserves, 25% of the national parks and sanctuaries, and impacting a population base of approximately 3.5 million people.<\/p>\n

The Supporting Partner for the 7th<\/span> Wildlife Protection Government Law College National Moot Court Competition, 2025-26, is the Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies Foundation<\/span>. Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies Foundation is a trust-based, collaborative philanthropy chaired by Ms. Rohini Nilekani. It believes that lasting social change begins with a strong Samaaj<\/span> working alongside the Sarkaar<\/span> and Bazaar<\/span>. With over three decades of experience in civic engagement, it supports leaders, ideas, and institutions across education, water, gender equity, environment, and justice. The organization has granted over ₹110 crores to 292 partners while supporting 155 current grantees. It emphasizes empathy, co-creation, and patient, unrestricted funding to drive long-term systemic change.<\/p>\n

FORMAT OF THE MOOT:<\/h3>\n

A maximum of 20 teams<\/span> shall participate and registrations shall be accepted on a first-come first-serve basis. The Competition will be conducted in an offline<\/span> mode. The participating teams will go through two Preliminary Rounds, the Quarter-Final Round, the Semi-Final Round and ultimately, the Final Round of Arguments. Additionally, a Researcher’s Test will be conducted in an MCQ format, based on the applicable law, precedents and facts pertaining to the Moot Proposition. Eminent lawyers and Judges of the highest standing in India, academicians and experts in the field of wildlife and forest law shall converge to adjudicate the various rounds of the Competition. The awards given out include prizes for the Best Team, Second-Best Team, Best Speaker, Second-Best Speaker, Best Memorial, Second-Best Memorial & Best Researcher.<\/p>\n

THE PANEL DISCUSSION:<\/h3>\n

The Wildlife Protection Government Law College National Moot Court Competition is accompanied by a Panel Discussion which delves into current socio-legal questions that often relate closely to the Moot Proposition. The Panel Discussion features eminent personalities from the fields of environmental law, wildlife conservation and media among others. This discussion offers unique insights into contemporary legal and societal issues.<\/p>\n

Last year, an engaging conversation was held between Ms. Shivangi Adani and renowned wildlife activist Dr. Anish Andheria on the topic ‘Role of Wildlife Science in Addressing Human-Wildlife Conflict.<\/span>’ We are pleased to announce that the Panel Discussion for this edition will take place offline at Government Law College, Mumbai. We extend a warm invitation to all those interested in attending the Panel Discussion.<\/p>\n

THE MOOT PROPOSITION:<\/h3>\n

The Moot Proposition revolves around the State’s failure to preserve an inventoried wetland that was leased for industrial development and explores the tension between ecological conservation and developmental interests. It investigates the extent of the judiciary’s power to compel the State Government to protect an area when discretionary power has been vested in the State Government under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and whether third-party rights can coexist with such protection. It also examines the interface between the Wetland (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017 and the CRZ Notification, 2019.<\/p>\n

REGISTRATIONS:<\/h3>\n

All interested colleges must provisionally register themselves by sending an e-mail to wpm.glc@gmail.com<\/span>.<\/a> The last date to provisionally register is 20th<\/span> November, 2025, by 11:59 p.m. IST<\/span>. Only after the provisional registration has been confirmed shall a link to a Google Form and details for the payment of registration fees be provided.<\/p>\n

A nominal registration fee of Rs. 5000\/- (Rupees Five Thousand Only)<\/span> must be paid by each registering team. The Registration Fee must be paid via NEFT, the details of which shall be provided once the provisional registration has been confirmed. This Registration Fee is inclusive of accommodation which shall be provided at the cost of the Organisers for teams residing outside of Mumbai.<\/p>\n

ELIGIBILITY:<\/h3>\n

Participation is restricted to bona-fide law students enrolled either in the 3-year L.L.B Law course, or a 5-year integrated Law course studying in India. Participation is limited to only one team per college or university. Cross college\/university teams are strictly prohibited.<\/p>\n
