NUJS ranked 4th in NIRF 2024 (Law), received NAAC A+ (2025) in its first assessment cycle, and has been consistently ranked among India&#8217;s top law schools by Outlook India, Mint, and LexisNexis Halsbury&#8217;s Law Monthly, besides winning the SILF&#8212;MILAT Institutional Excellence Award (2015).<\/p>\n<h3>About the Competition<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Where the Pen Meets the Gavel.<\/span> The <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1st NUJS Judgment Writing Competition<\/span> invites participants to think and write like constitutional court judges in a structured simulation of judicial decision-making. The competition opens with an <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">online preliminary round<\/span> (single-issue problems, pre-screened by a Board of Editors) and culminates in <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">three intensive offline days at the NUJS campus<\/span> where shortlisted participants sit as a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">bench<\/span> on a novel, multi-issue case. Finalists will hear <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">in-person submissions from arguing counsel<\/span>, deliberate with peers to ensure <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">coherent bench opinions<\/span>, and deliver reasoned judgments, gaining practical insight into the pressures and ethics of constitutional adjudication.<\/p>\n<h3>Theme<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Crowdsourced Constitutionalism<\/span> in a fictional country, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Kurlustan<\/span>, recently independent and facing layered constitutional, social, and political crises. The theme invites engagement with:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>\n<p>Foundational jurisprudence, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">judicial philosophy<\/span>, and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">constitutionalism<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Executive overreach<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">civil rights<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">judicial propriety<\/span>, and <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">moral reasoning<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Objectives<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>\n<p>Bridge theory and practice across constitutional law, legal reasoning, and judicial temperament<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Move beyond legal formalism toward constitutional vision, ethics, and social balance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Simulate real-world judicial pressures (political\/social tensions, time constraints, ethical dilemmas)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Develop collaboration and coherent opinion-writing; foster long-term scholarship via a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">published collection<\/span> of the best judgments and analyses<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Format &amp; Rounds<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The Competition shall proceed in two phases:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Phase 1 &#8211; Online Preliminary Rounds:&#9;<\/span><br \/>Participants submit a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">judgment<\/span> on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">one<\/span> of several <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">single-issue problems<\/span> (to be drafted by the Board of Editors).
