{"id":364750,"date":"2025-10-25T13:00:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-25T07:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/?p=364750"},"modified":"2025-10-25T12:23:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-25T06:53:12","slug":"rti-reply-pendency-of-cases-before-supreme-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2025\/10\/25\/rti-reply-pendency-of-cases-before-supreme-court\/","title":{"rendered":"RTI reply sheds light on pendency of Habeas Corpus, Preventive Detention, UAPA and NDPS cases before the Supreme Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Supreme Court:<\/span> In a notable move towards judicial transparency and ensuring judicial efficiency, on 13-10-2025, the designated Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) of the Supreme Court of India, while answering a RTI query regarding pendency of cases before Supreme Court of India, responded with the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">data on pendency and disposal of cases under 4 categories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">On 20-9-2025, query under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0002760680\" target=\"_blank\">Right to Information Act, 2005<\/a>, was filed by the advocate and activist Y. Balachander Reddy seeking information on total number of &#8220;Habeas Corpus Cases&#8221; pending for adjudication before Supreme Court of India and total number of disposed of Habeas Corpus Cases. The RTI query further sought information on pending bail petitions under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0002808781\" target=\"_blank\">Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967<\/a> (UAPA); <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0002802179\" target=\"_blank\">Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985<\/a> (NDPS Act) and statistical information of total number of suo-moto Public Interest Litigation Cases registered by Supreme Court of India and pending before the Court commencing from 01-01-2023 till date of disposal of RTI petition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The Additional Registrar of the Supreme Court who is also the designated CPIO, answered the RTI query under the following categories:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Habeas Corpus &amp; Preventive Detention Cases [Data from 1-6-2021 to 26-9-2025]<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>\n<p style=\"\">Pending Cases: <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">113<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Disposed Cases: <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">526<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Bail Petitions under UAPA and other related legislations such as POTA, National Security Act, COFEPOSA and TADA [Data from 01-01-2024 to 25-09-2025]<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Pending Petitions: <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">76<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The afore-stated number was given as per the data available in Integrated Case Management and Information System (ICMIS).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Pending Bail Petitions under NDPS Act [Data from 01-01-2024 to 25-09-2025]<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Pending Petitions: <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">273<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The afore-stated number was also given as per the data available in Integrated Case Management and Information System (ICMIS).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Suo Motu Writ Petitions (Civil &amp; Criminal)<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Answering the query on pending and disposed of suo motu writ petitions, the RTI reply stated that this data can be accessed from the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">National Judicial Data Grid<\/span><a id=\"fnref1\" href=\"#fn1\" title=\"1. https:\/\/scdg.sci.gov.in\/scnjdg\/\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; margin-bottom: 3%;\">Source: Application Number:
