ABOUT THE ORGANISERS<\/h3>\n

Government Law College, Mumbai<\/span>, established in 1855, is the oldest law college in Asia, a pioneer in legal education – an institution par excellence. The generations of legal luminaries who have been nurtured by this unique institution have made a seminal contribution to the evolution of the Indian Legal System. Sir Dinshaw Mulla, Mr. A. A. A. Fyzee and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar have all been the principals of this venerated institution. Former Chief Justices of India including Mr. Harilal Kania – the first Chief Justice of India, Mr. P. N. Bhagwati, Mr. S. H. Kapadia, Mr. M. H. Kania and Mr. S. P. Bharucha all began their careers at GLC. The Hon\u2019ble President of India, Her Excellency, Ms. Pratibha Patil, Mr. Soli Sorabjee, Mr. Fali Nariman, Mr. Anil Divan, Mr. T. R. Andhyarujina and Mr. Goolam Vahanvati have all been students of this very Institution.<\/p>\n

The Competition is organised in collaboration with the Chief Justice M. C. Chagla Memorial Trust<\/span>. The late Mr. M. C. Chagla was the first Indian Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. He served the country in various capacities, including as Ambassador to the USA, Mexico, and Cuba; High Commissioner to England; Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bombay; and Union Minister for Education. He also taught Constitutional Law at Government Law College, Mumbai. A champion of civil liberties and democracy, this Competition stands as a tribute to his inspiring legacy.<\/p>\n

ABOUT THE COMPETITION<\/h3>\n

The M. C. Chagla Memorial Moot Court Competition began as a city-level Competition and was subsequently elevated to state and national levels due to its growing popularity and participation. Since its 18th<\/span> edition, it has been hosted on a national platform, attracting prestigious law colleges across India.<\/p>\n

The Competition is designed to simulate real court proceedings, judged by esteemed legal professionals. It provides an exceptional platform for students to develop advocacy skills and engage with contemporary legal issues.<\/p>\n

FORMAT OF THE MOOT<\/h3>\n

The Competition will be conducted in a Hybrid<\/span> Format<\/span> with the Preliminary & Quarter-Final Rounds being held Online on 27th<\/span> September, 2025 and the Semi-Final & Final Rounds to be held Offline on 11th<\/span> October, 2025, in Mumbai.<\/p>\n

The participating teams will go through two Preliminary Rounds of Arguments, one Quarter-Final Round of Arguments, one Semi-Final Round of Arguments and ultimately, the Final Round of Arguments. Eminent lawyers and Judges of the highest standing in India, academicians and experts in the field of Indian Constitutional Law shall converge to adjudicate the various rounds of the Competition. The awards given out include prizes for the Best Team, Second-Best Team, Best Speaker, Second-Best Speaker, and Best Memorial.<\/p>\n

THE PANEL DISCUSSION<\/h3>\n

The Moot is accompanied by a Panel Discussion that delves into current socio-legal questions that often relate closely to the Proposition. Featuring eminent personalities from the field of Indian Constitutional Law, this discussion offers unique insights into contemporary legal and societal issues.<\/p>\n

Previous editions of the Panel Discussion have explored thought-provoking themes such as \u201cFrequent Internet Blackouts: Protecting National Interest or Suppressing Free Speech?\u201d<\/span>, featuring distinguished legal experts and practitioners like, Mr. Janak Dwarkadas, Mr. Mihir Desai, Mr. Hitesh Jain, Mr. Sharan Jagtiani, and Prof. Kishu Daswani.<\/p>\n

This year, we are pleased to announce that the Panel Discussion will take place Offline on 10th<\/span> October, 2025, at Government Law College, Mumbai. We extend a warm invitation to all interested persons to attend the Panel Discussion.<\/p>\n

THE MOOT PROPOSITION<\/h3>\n

The Moot Proposition involves issues surrounding the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The dispute arises from amendments that mandate the inclusion of non-Qadiri members in Waqf Boards, abolition of the provision relating to “Waqf by User”, and grant powers to District Collectors to determine Waqf status and validity. The Petitioner contends that these changes infringe upon the Qadiri community’s rights under Articles 14, 25, 26, 29, and 30 of the Constitution. The Union argues that the amendments are essential for transparency, accountability, and better governance of Waqf properties.<\/p>\n

REGISTRATIONS<\/h3>\n

All interested teams must provisionally register by sending an email to mcchagla.glc@gmail.com<\/span><\/a>. The last date to provisionally register is 20th<\/span> August, 2025, by 11:59 p.m. IST<\/span>. Only after confirmation of provisional registration will teams receive a link to the Google Form and payment details.<\/p>\n

A nominal registration fee of INR 2,500\/-<\/span> shall be charged to all teams. The Registration Fee must be paid via NEFT, the details of which shall be provided once the provisional registration has been confirmed. This Registration Fee is inclusive of accommodation which shall be provided to the teams qualifying for the Offline Rounds and residing outside<\/span> Mumbai.<\/p>\n

ELIGIBILITY<\/h3>\n

Students enrolled in a full-time or part-time undergraduate law programme at the time of the Competition are eligible to compete. Participation is limited to only one (1) team per University\/College. Cross University\/College teams are strictly prohibited.<\/p>\n
