{"id":351531,"date":"2025-06-26T11:30:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T06:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/?p=351531"},"modified":"2025-06-26T11:16:05","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T05:46:05","slug":"nhrc-takes-suo-motu-cognizance-death-three-prisoners-varanasi-jails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2025\/06\/26\/nhrc-takes-suo-motu-cognizance-death-three-prisoners-varanasi-jails\/","title":{"rendered":"NHRC seeks inquest and postmortem reports on reported death of three prisoners in two days in Varanasi jails"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">National Human Rights Commission:<\/span> On 25-06-2025, the National Human Rights Commission (\u2018NHRC\u2019) took <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">suo motu<\/span> cognizance of a media report revealing the death of three prisoners in custody of the state in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">As per the media report, a male and a female prisoner lodged in the District Jail died due to illness, whereas another lodged in the Central Jail of Varanasi died due to heart attack one after the other on 15-06-2025 and 16-06-2025.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The NHRC observed that if the contents of the news report were true, it would raise serious issues of human rights violations.
