{"id":348477,"date":"2025-05-21T17:45:59","date_gmt":"2025-05-21T12:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/?p=348477"},"modified":"2025-05-21T17:18:15","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T11:48:15","slug":"nhrc-takes-suo-motu-cognizance-ashoka-university-professor-mahmudabad-arrest-remand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2025\/05\/21\/nhrc-takes-suo-motu-cognizance-ashoka-university-professor-mahmudabad-arrest-remand\/","title":{"rendered":"NHRC takes suo motu cognizance of Ashoka University Professor Mahmudabad&#8217;s arrest and remand over human rights violations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">National Human Rights Commission:<\/span> On 21-05-2025, the National Human Rights Commission (&#8216;NHRC&#8217;) took suo motu cognizance in a case involving the arrest of Ashoka University Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">In a press release published by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), this action was taken after NHRC came across a news report dated 20-05-2025 regarding the arrest and remand to custody of Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The NHRC noted that the gist of the allegations, contained in the report, based on which Professor Mahmudabad was arrested, disclosed, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">prima facie<\/span>, that his human rights and liberty were violated. Therefore, NHRC deemed it a fit case for taking suo motu cognizance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Accordingly, it issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Haryana, calling for a detailed report on the matter within one week.<\/p>\n<h3>Background<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Professor Mahmudabad is facing charges over his social media posts regarding &#8216;Operation Sindoor&#8217;
