NALSAR University of Law mourns the passing of Dr. P. S. Rao, a distinguished international jurist and our Director of the Centre for International Trade and Business Laws, whose contributions to international law have left an enduring legacy. A former Chair of the International Law Commission (ILC), Ad Hoc Judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Judge at the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), and President of Institut De Droit International, Dr. Rao was a globally respected authority in international legal affairs.<\/p>\n

His leadership in the ILC significantly influenced the codification and progressive development of international legal principles, and his judicial contributions played a crucial role in resolving complex international disputes. Dr. Rao also served as the Chief Legal Advisor to the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, shaping India’s engagement with international legal frameworks. His work in law of the sea, environmental law, and dispute resolution remains highly regarded in legal circles.<\/p>\n

As the Director of the Centre for International Trade and Business Laws at NALSAR, Dr. Rao was instrumental in advancing academic research and policy discussions on global trade law. Under his leadership, the Centre became a hub for cutting-edge research, policy analysis, and international collaboration, organizing high-profile conferences, seminars, and workshops with leading scholars, policymakers, and practitioners.<\/p>\n

Dr. Rao’s contributions as a mentor, scholar, and institution-builder have left an indelible mark on NALSAR and the international legal community. His passion for legal education and unwavering dedication to his students and colleagues will be remembered with great respect.<\/p>\n

To honor his remarkable legacy, NALSAR will organize the Dr. P. S. Rao Memorial Annual International Law Lectures to celebrate his contributions to international law.<\/p>\n
