About the TNNLU & The Centre<\/h3>\n

The Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU), Tiruchirappalli located in Srirangam Taluk of the Tiruchirappalli District, was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2012 to provide quality legal education. It offers two five years integrated Undergraduate programs, B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) & B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) and One Year LL.M. programs in Corporate and Securities Laws, Intellectual Property Laws and Natural Resources Law. TNNLU also offers Ph.D. programs in Law and Interdisciplinary perspectives since 2021. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recognized and approved TNNLU under Section 2(f) and under Section 12B of the UGC Act, 1956. TNNLU is recognized by the Bar Council of India (BCI). The Legal Centre for History of South India is one of the vibrant research centers in the Tamil Nadu National Law University, Tiruchirappalli. It was established with the financial support of the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2021. The Centre aims to promote the knowledge of legal history by engaging in research projects, organizing academic programs such as seminars, workshops, and conferences and collecting manuscripts related to the colonial and pre-colonial legal culture of South India in general and the Tamil region in particular. The Centre has published the following books as part of its broader project.<\/p>\n

About the VIT-AP School of Social Sciences and Humanities (VISH)<\/h3>\n

The VIT-AP School of Social Sciences and Humanities (VISH) is one of the rapidly growing schools at VIT-AP University which is located in the capital region of Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh. VISH has evolved into an independent school that combines the Department of Languages and a wide-array of Social Sciences courses that have been offered at the university since its inception in 2017. The school offers a B.A.-M.A. Dual Degree program with majors in History, Economics, and Political Science and minors in History, Economics, Political Science, Geography, and Psychology, along with a wide range of electives. The B.A.- M.A. Dual Degree program is primarily oriented towards administrative services. The ever-expanding school caters to the needs of the students across disciplines. The focus is on providing holistic knowledge which would complement other disciplines of study offered at the University resulting in individuals who are capable of applying new knowledge and solving problems.<\/p>\n

About the Conference<\/h3>\n

Indian Legal History is an emerging academic field which attracts the attention of not only the historians and legal scholars, but also political scientists and anthropologists both within and outside of India. Majority of the scholars irrespective of their disciplines are interested in studying the modern period in history, especially the different aspects of the colonial regime. Attempts have been made to understand the relationship between modern Indian laws and the colonial rule in India. However, a very few scholars have attempted to delve into areas such as relationship between law and nationalism in India. Through the available works, one can understand how colonialists justified their rule in India by emphasizing on the importance of legal reforms and codification as part of their civilizational mission. At the same time questions such as the nationalist response to the colonial arguments on law and judicial reforms, the role of nationalism in the making of modern Indian laws, the contribution of lawyers and judges to the nationalist cause, and their methods of participation, are some of the many questions which are longing for attention. This conference seeks to address these existing lacunae in the field and also seeks to bring out histories of the contribution of lesser-known legal professionals to the national movement in different regions of the country.<\/p>\n

Call for Papers<\/h3>\n

Contributions in the form of research papers are requested from students, research scholars, academics, and lawyers across India on the following themes and related research that might fall outside the ambit of the themes.<\/p>\n
