With Justice Hima Kohli&#8217;s retirement, the number fell from 34 to 33. No recommendations were made by the Supreme Court Collegium vis-a-vis existing vacancy of 1 Supreme Court Judge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">However, in October, the current Chief Justice of India, Dr D.Y Chandrachud, recommended the name of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2024\/05\/14\/know-your-judge-justice-sanjiv-khanna-supreme-court-of-india-legal-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Justice Sanjiv Khanna<\/a> as his successor. Subsequently, the President of India in exercise of powers under Article 124(2) of the Constitution, appointed Justice Sanjiv Khanna, seniormost Judge of the Supreme Court, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2024\/10\/25\/justice-sanjiv-khanna-appointed-51st-chief-justice-of-india-supreme-court-legal-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">51st Chief Justice of India<\/a>. He will take charge of office with effect from 11-11-2024 after the retirement of Dr Justice DY Chandrachud on 10-11-2024.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Justice Sanjiv Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court on 18-1-2019 and is due to retire on 13-5-2024, which means he will have a tenure of almost 6 months as Chief Justice of India.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;
