On 15-10-2024, the Bar Council of India issued a notification laying down directory guidelines for payment of a minimum stipend to junior advocates to nurture a balanced approach and encourage financial support.<\/p>\n

Key Points:<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Recommended minimum stipend in:\n
      \n
    • Urban areas- Rs. 20,000\/- per month<\/li>\n
    • Rural areas- Rs. 15, 000\/- per month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Minimum stipend will be provided for a period of at least 3 years from the date of engagement.<\/li>\n
    • Stipend will be paid via bank transfer to ensure transparency and accountability.<\/li>\n
    • The implementation of these guidelines will not be made mandatory across the board due to the disparities such as:\n
        \n
      • Advocates in metropolitan cities have higher earning potential as compared to in smaller towns and rural areas where the lawyers have fewer opportunities and lower paying cases.<\/li>\n
      • Advocates in the field of corporate law, intellectual property or tax have greater financial resources as compared to those practicing in civil, criminal or public interest litigation.<\/li>\n
      • Senior advocates, advocates, law firms have a considerable difference in financial situations as compared to solo practitioners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • An annual report has to be submitted to the respective State Bar Council detailing the number of junior advocates, the stipend paid and duration of their engagement.<\/li>\n
      • Junior advocates who do not receive the stipulated stipend or face other engagement- related grievances can file a complaint with the respective State Bar Council.<\/li>\n
