The Bar Council of India has issued a press release in light of the judgment dated 03-07-2024<\/a> by the Madras High Court, highlighting that the legal profession is a noble service to society and not a business driven by profit motives.<\/p>\n

Additionally, BCI has also issued cease-and-desist notices to online platforms such as Quikr India Pvt Ltd, Sulekha.com New Media Pvt Ltd, Just Dial Limited and Grotal.com addressing the illegal advertising and solicitation of legal services on the platforms, in violation of Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules, 1975, which states that:<\/p>\n

“An advocate shall not solicit work or advertise, either directly or indirectly, whether by circulars, advertisements, touts, personal communications, interviews not warranted by personal relations, furnishing or inspiring newspaper comments or producing his photographs to be published in connection with cases in which he has been engaged or concerned.” This rule aims to maintain the decorum and ethics of the legal profession.”<\/p>\n

In addition, BCI also issued the following directives:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \n

    State Bar Councils directed to initiate strict action against advocates advertising or seeking work through online portals.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Complaints to be filed against online service providers facilitating illegal advertising of lawyers.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Ensuring removal of all illegal advertisements related to legal services on online platforms within four weeks.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    State Bar Councils to submit a report on actions taken by 10-08-2024; a compliance hearing has been scheduled for 20-09-2024.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Further, failing to comply with the above directives would result in the BCI initiating legal proceedings and imposing penalties against non-compliant organizations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
