{"id":323179,"date":"2024-05-29T14:30:27","date_gmt":"2024-05-29T09:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/?p=323179"},"modified":"2024-05-29T14:13:50","modified_gmt":"2024-05-29T08:43:50","slug":"dhc-grants-bail-to-student-activist-sharjeel-imam-in-sedition-and-uapa-case-legal-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2024\/05\/29\/dhc-grants-bail-to-student-activist-sharjeel-imam-in-sedition-and-uapa-case-legal-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Delhi High Court grants bail to student activist Sharjeel Imam in Sedition and UAPA Case"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Delhi High Court:<\/span> A Division Bench of Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain, JJ. granted statutory bail to student activist Sharjeel Imam in a sedition and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/DocumentLink.aspx?q=JTXT-0002808781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967<\/a> (&#8216;UAPA&#8217;) case for allegedly making inflammatory speeches at Aligarh Muslim University and Delhi&#8217;s Jamia area during the 2020 communal riots.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Earlier, in 2022, the Saket Court, Delhi granted bail to Imam in the sedition case for the inflammatory speeches made by him during the CAA-NRC protests in 2019. This order was partially set aside by this Court while exercising its criminal revision jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">In February, the Trial Court denied bail to Imam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Imam would, however, continue to remain in custody as he is also an accused in the larger conspiracy case of the Delhi riots that took place in
