On 28-01-2024, the Supreme Court of India marked the commencement of its Diamond Jubilee year since its inception on 28 January 1950. The celebration was marked with the presence of Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi and several guests from Judiciary of neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Mauritius, Nepal and Sri Lanka among others.<\/p>\n

Chief Justice of India, Dr. DY Chandrachud presented a statue of Dr. BR Ambedkar to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Inauguration of Diamond Jubilee Year of the Supreme Court of India.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Modi in his speech mentioned that “The makers of the Indian Constitution dreamed of a free India upholding the principles of freedom, equality and justice. The Supreme Court of India has consistently endeavored towards the protection of such principles. The institution has consistently empowered the vibrant democracy of India.”<\/p>\n

“It is our duty to extend the accessibility of this Court to the extreme points of India so that it can serve the needs of every citizen.”<\/p>\n

He further pressed upon the entitlement of citizens for ‘ease of justice’ while Supreme Court remains the primary medium and emphasized that “It is our duty to extend the accessibility of this Court to the extreme points of India so that it can serve the needs of every citizen”.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister briefed about the Centre’s nod for the third phase of the e-Courts Project and informed regarding allocation of 4 times the budget approved for the second phase. He further informed about the allocation of Rs. 800 Crore budget for the expansion of the Supreme Court building complex and took a jibe cautioning Supreme Court against any petition complaining extravagant spending as happened for Parliament building.<\/p>\n

While addressing the guests, CJI Dr. Chandrachud expressed that “A conversation about this Court must be necessarily prefaced with a conversation about the Constitution of India<\/a>. It was through the Constitution that the people of our country gave themselves this Court. ….. The Supreme Court was established with a sense of idealism — that laws would be interpreted by a Constitutional Court in accordance with the rule of law and not by colonial values or social hierarchies. It affirmed the belief that the judiciary should serve as a bulwark against injustice, tyranny, and arbitrariness. The Supreme Court is an institution of resolution and justice. The fact that people approach it in large numbers, speaks to how far we have succeeded in discharging that role.”<\/p>\n
