{"id":309654,"date":"2023-12-19T12:00:15","date_gmt":"2023-12-19T06:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/?p=309654"},"modified":"2023-12-19T11:59:38","modified_gmt":"2023-12-19T06:29:38","slug":"supreme-court-stays-defamation-proceedings-against-ips-d-roopa-filed-by-ias-rohini-sindhuri","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2023\/12\/19\/supreme-court-stays-defamation-proceedings-against-ips-d-roopa-filed-by-ias-rohini-sindhuri\/","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court stays defamation proceedings against IPS D Roopa filed by IAS Rohini Sindhuri"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Supreme Court:<\/span> In a petition filed by IPS Officer D Roopa against the judgment and order passed by the Karnataka High Court, wherein the Court refused to quash the criminal defamation case against D Roopa filed by IAS Officer Rohini Sindhuri, after D Roopa shared her personal pictures on social media and made corruption allegations against her, the division bench comprising Abhay S Oka and Pankaj Mithal, JJ. Has directed an interim stay on the criminal defamation proceedings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Background:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">On 18-02-2023, Rohini Sindhuri discovered that D Roopa had made several allegations against her in her social media posts. This led to a public spat between them, which prompted the State government to transfer both officers. Thereafter, Sindhuri issued a legal notice to D Roopa and demanded an unconditional apology and &#8377;1 crore in damages for the loss of her reputation and mental agony.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">The Karnataka Court ordered the initiation of a criminal defamation case against D Roopa. Aggrieved, she approached the Karnataka High Court, which rejected the plea. Thus, D Roopa approached the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 3%;\">Initially, the Court asked the two officers to resolve their dispute through mediation. Upon its failure, the Court directed Roopa to remove the objectionable posts within 24 hours.
