National Law Institute University, Bhopal is organizing a National Seminar on Consumer Protection Laws sponsored by the Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Government of India and co-sponsored by the Department of Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection, Government of Madhya Pradesh.<\/p>\n

ABOUT NLIU<\/p>\n

The National Law Institute University is the third NLU to be established in the country. It was established by Professor V.S. Rekhi in the year 1997 and has proven to be a true centre of excellence ever since, creating the best of the legal minds in the country.<\/p>\n

ABOUT CONFERENCE<\/p>\n

The Consumer Protection Act of 1986<\/a> was passed to safeguard customers’ rights, but as time went on, it became clear that the Act didn’t cover issues like product liability, consumer contracts made with service providers or manufacturers, or the e-commerce industry.<\/p>\n

In order to fill in the gaps in the Act of 1986, Parliament passed the Consumer Protection Act, 2019<\/a>, which aims to provide a more comprehensive and robust mechanism to safeguard and strengthen the interests of consumers and their rights by successfully preventing unfair trade practices, adulteration of food, misleading advertisements, defective products, and black marketing, as well as prohibiting a rampant rise in scams and frauds flourishing in the digital markets.<\/p>\n

The Central Consumer Protection Authority, Product Liability, submission of e-complaints, deterrents in offenses and fines, and mediation are the main components of the Act of 2019.<\/p>\n

After three years of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019<\/a>, being fully operational, including two years during the Covid Pandemic, it is important to discuss the challenges related to the promotion of consumer welfare and the protection of their rights in detail and find workable and long-lasting solutions to them, including the meaningful and effective functioning of various bodies in digital mode.<\/p>\n

WHO ALL ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE CONFERENCE<\/p>\n

The seminar is intended for representatives from various organizations involved in consumer protection and welfare, as well as for officials involved in dispute resolution, mediators, business owners, academics, researchers, law students, and attorneys. It is also open to members of NGOs, industry, and think tanks.<\/p>\n
