I want you to come with me ..\u201d he paused, unsure.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cWhere to?\u201d Gourango blurted out impatiently.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cTo the Nizamuddin Dargah. Today is Thursday. They have qawwali singers who shall sing for the Saint. I am going. I would be so honoured if you would come with me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>_____<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018<\/strong><em><strong>How Gourango Lost His O \u2013 A Non-Story<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u2019, (Eastern Book Company, 2022)\u00a0<\/strong>is less than 250 pages. The above-mentioned quote appears in page number: 140. Before our Gourango Ghose \u201c<em>could make sense of it, a South Calcutta, club going, missionary school educated, urbane, polished and English accented boy was sharing a rickshaw with a country bumpkin who, under ordinary circumstances, would never have crossed his path and even if he did, would not have crossed his mind<\/em>.\u201d The \u2018country bumpkin\u2019 has a name. Noor Mallik, Head of a\u00a0<em>Madarsa\u00a0<\/em>at Sundarbans. We describe facts, arguments and understand whether Judges interpreted correctly. Autobiographies go much deeper. It\u2019s not just Courts who had their bells rung, in any matter. Clients, Counsel, Clerks, Judges as also Family Members of each and Court Stenographers, Court Masters, Juniors to Counsel \u2013 all have stories to tell, a moment to describe. Consider this: when at High Court of Calcutta, before Hon\u2019ble Judges Bose and Jhunjhunwala, we learn \u2013 Court Master, Narendra Biswas, who \u201c<em>promptly got up and replaced Noor\u2019s file\u2026<\/em>\u201d, had little \u2018<em>compassion<\/em>\u2019 or \u2018<em>kindness<\/em>\u2019. Why? It had its inception when Narendra\u2019s love for Hindi film songs met no indulgence and Naru gave up on his dream of being a playback singer! Consider this too: when Service Law Expert, Samar Banerjee pleaded, \u201c<em>Milord may I have some time to examine your decision so that I can address you\u2026<\/em>\u201c, Justice Roopa Bose \u201c<em>had been a Lawyer long enough to know that this was the oldest trick\u2026 when in a spot, retreat and hope to fight another day<\/em>.\u201d Justice Roopa Bose\u2019s journey from being a Lawyer to a Judge? Gourango details that as well in his art of writing on a case.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Purpose? Gourango, best rank-holder when studying Law, is addicted to learn as he is even when Noor, attending a \u2018conference\u2019 for \u2018<em>Noor Mallik<\/em>\u00a0v.\u00a0<em>State of West Bengal &amp;Ors.<\/em>, SLP (C) No. 2343\/199, spoke up for the first time to Senior Advocate, Indumati Khilnani: \u201c<em>Mummy, help karna<\/em>\u201d and repeated, \u201c<em>Mummy you must help me, I have got you homemade honey<\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>Noor Mallik<\/em>\u00a0v.\u00a0<em>State of West Bengal<\/em>\u2018 was listed before Sreedharan C. Pandiyan J (\u201c<em>a tough nut to crack<\/em>\u201d) and Bipin Bihari Panda J (\u201c<em>completely docile and subdued\u2026 at home<\/em>\u201d) of Supreme Court of India. How different were Hon\u2019ble Judges Pandiyan and Panda from Hon\u2019ble Judges Bose and Jhunjhunwala? \u201c<em>Sorry, dismissed<\/em>\u201d, said Pandiyan and Panda JJ as final words. Court had sealed Noor\u2019s fate. Gourango still remembers Noor \u201c<em>ecstatically swaying<\/em>\u201d to Sufi music and \u201c<em>repeatedly praying, \u201cOh Auliya, let me win\u2026\u201d<\/em>.\u201d In effect, Senior Advocate, Sanjoy Ghose carries Gourango\u2019s diary before and after Noor. His recollection of \u2013 \u00a0\u201c<em>giant legend<\/em>\u201d \u2013 Senior Advocate, Indumati Khilnani and Gourango\u2019s time beyond Indumati\u2019s Chamber provides fantastic insights. Gourango tested a Client\u2019s faith in Sai Baba once! Later, when before Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, Justice Gobordhan Sakia, Gourango accepted, \u201c<em>Sai Baba indeed was at play<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<strong>\u2018<\/strong><em><strong>How Gourango Lost His O \u2013 A Non-Story<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0is \u201c<em>nothing but a collective experience of the many Noors<\/em>\u201d in Gourango\u2019s life over the years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I remember the day when I had messaged Senior Advocate, Sanjoy Ghose on Twitter, for the first time, requesting for a funny video he had\u00a0<em>tweeted<\/em>. Once received, I promptly sent that video to The National Law School of India University, Bangalore \u2018Telegram Group\u2019 of which I am a part. Believe it or not, I had no clue, Sanjoy Sir was a Super-Senior from that very Law School. I realized my mistake and thought I will do better in future. A couple of years have gone by and here I am reflecting on Sanjoy Sir\u2019s Book. Everything has a story. The great take away I have is: a matter, nearly always, goes beyond citations, interpretation and precedents. Do read, if possible, about every human involved, before venturing into a battle inside or outside of Court. Even if we don\u2019t win, we shall still be learned.
