The amendments were made to the existing British Columbia Employment Standards Act to strengthen paid sick leave legislation to protect workers and simplify the administrative process for businesses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Proposed Amendment<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Calender Year\u201d to Replace \u201cEmployment Year\u201d-<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\">Section 49.1 (1) is amended by striking out &#8220;each employment year&#8221; and substituting &#8220;each calendar year&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\">British Columbia became the first province in Canada to implement a minimum standard of five days of paid sick leave every year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 2. Section 3 of the Employment Standards Act, Revenue Service of British Columbia (R.S.B.C) 1996, c. 113, is amended<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\">(a) in the table in sub-section (2) and in the table in sub-section (3) by repealing the following as indicated:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 170px;\" width=\"644\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Column 1<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nMatter<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Column 2<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nPart or Section<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Paid personal illness or injury leave<\/td>\n<td>Section 49.1 (1) (a), (3) and (4)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(b) in sub-section (6) by striking out &#8220;Part 6 <em>[leaves and jury duty]<\/em> except for Section\u00a049.1\u00a0(1)\u00a0(a), (3) and (4) <em>[paid personal illness or injury leave]<\/em>;&#8221; and substituting &#8220;Part 6 <em>[leaves and jury duty]<\/em>;&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Research shown that\u00a0 most workers do not take full entitlement of the sick days.
