{"id":254471,"date":"2021-09-20T16:05:45","date_gmt":"2021-09-20T10:35:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/?p=254471"},"modified":"2021-09-20T16:03:26","modified_gmt":"2021-09-20T10:33:26","slug":"nhrc-issues-notice-to-dmrc-on-receiving-complaint-for-removal-of-misleading-signages-on-its-347-new-toilets-for-transgender-persons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scconline.com\/blog\/post\/2021\/09\/20\/nhrc-issues-notice-to-dmrc-on-receiving-complaint-for-removal-of-misleading-signages-on-its-347-new-toilets-for-transgender-persons\/","title":{"rendered":"NHRC issues notice to DMRC on receiving complaint for removal of misleading signages on its 347 new toilets for Transgender Persons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The National Human Rights Commission, India has issued a notice to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, DMRC, after taking cognizance of a complaint requesting removal of misleading signages on its 347 new toilets for Transgender Persons.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Allegedly, the name \u2018Ubhayalingi\u2019 with a symbolic photo of \u2018half-male and half-female\u2019 outside the new 347 Transgender friendly toilets, constructed by the DMRC at metro stations, is not the acceptable term for Transgender persons. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The signage fails to provide a safe space and prevent gender discrimination that the DMRC intended.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Commission has called for an action taken report from the Director (Works) and the Director (Projects), DRMC, on the grievances raised by the complainant within six weeks.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The complainant has requested the Commission for directions to the DMRC to remove all bilingual signage that mention \u2018Ubhayalingi\u2019 immediately and make the following changes:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1. The transliteration of the term \u2018Transgender Person\u2019 in Hindi should be used in all signages;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2. The symbol for transgender persons should be \u2018T\u2019 instead of the \u2018half male-half female symbol;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3. A fresh press release be issued after the change wherein the signage and the statement use \u2018Transgender Persons\u2019 instead of Transgender;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">4. hat the above changes be followed in all future actions of the DMRC including separate public toilet facilities for Transgender Persons at its upcoming stations in Phase-IV;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">5. DMRC should notify a complaint officer for notifying violations of provisions of the Transgender Persons Act.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>National Human Rights Commission<\/strong><\/p>\n<p
