The Centre for Consumer Protection Law and Policy (CCPLaP)at NUALS, Kochi is organising a Workshop on the topic\u00a0\u00a0\u201cNew Trends and Key Challenges in the Area of Consumer Protection Laws\u201d\u00a0on\u00a011th<\/sup>\u00a0and 12th March 2019<\/strong>.\u00a0 Brief description of the seminar\u00a0and its theme is given below.\u00a0\u00a0We invite papers from the students, scholars, academicians and all the members of the legal fraternity.<\/p>\n

Concept Note<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

The contemporary era is marked as the era of consumers. No country can knowingly or unknowingly disregard the interest of the consumers. This can be argued on the basis of fast enactment of consumer protection laws in almost all part of the world. India is not an exception to this rule. The Consumer Protection Act, 1986, is one of the examples that can be treated as a milestone in the history of socio-economic legislation to protect the interests of consumers in India. The main objective of the 1986 Act is to ensure better protection of consumers through compensatory provisions. The Act is intended to provide simple, speedy and inexpensive redressal to the consumers\u2019 grievances, relief of a specific nature and award of compensation, whenever appropriate, to the consumer.<\/p>\n

The advent of globalization coupled with modern business methods has had a significant impact on consumer experience in India.\u00a0 These developments which have altered the market dynamic significantly both from a retail and a technological perspective were not envisaged by the creators of the Act. Even after three amendments to the Consumer Protection Act 1986 in 1991, 1993 and 2002, the problems remained unresolved and new ones continue to mushroom.\u00a0 Hence, the Act in its present form is an inefficient piece of legislation, not keeping in pace with the new market dynamics, multi-layered delivery chains advertising and marketing machinery.\u00a0 In order to address these issues and others, the Consumer Protection Bill, 2018 was tabled in the lower house of the Indian Parliament i.e. the Lok Sabha on January 5, 2018, to substitute the Act with a new one. This however is yet to be passed by the Parliament.<\/p>\n

Objective of the Program<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. To have a coherent technical understanding of the laws regarding consumer protection in force in India, and the reforms required thereof. This is proposed to be done through an intensive one-day workshop on the first day.<\/li>\n
  2. To ensure that the student participants become informed consumers, understanding and acknowledging the values, standards and ethics in consumerism. This is sought to be done, on the second day, through management activities that primarily aim at skill development in this area.<\/li>\n
  3. To inculcate in the participants a culture of research. This is proposed to be done by calling for papers with a pre-determined topic to be submitted on a given date. A few selected papers on merit will be published in the form of a book with ISBN Number.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Eligibility<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

    This program is aimed at students of law and management studies interested in consumer protection laws. The following students are eligible to participate in this program. Students\u2019 pursuing: B. Com LLB, B.B.A. LL.B, B.A.LL.B, B.Com, BBA.<\/p>\n

    The maximum number of participants will be 100 students, who will be selected on a first come first serve basis.<\/p>\n

    Registration Procedure<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

    The interested students and Research Scholars may send an expression of interest to\u00a0ccplap@nuals.ac.in<\/a>. Selected participants will receive a confirmation by 1st of March 2019. The decision of the Selection Committee shall be final.<\/p>\n

    The participation fee for the program shall be free. It will be on first come first serve basis and it will be spot registration. All participants will be awarded a participation certificate.<\/p>\n

    Call for Papers<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

    Research papers, essays and articles are invited from the academic practitioners, research scholars and the students. The papers should be the author\u2019s original work and\/or should not be any published work.<\/p>\n

    Co-authorship is allowed but is restricted to two. Selected research papers, essays and articles will be published in the form of a Book with ISBN, which may be notified in due course of time to the participants. Publication of papers shall be subject to the approval of the Editorial Board.<\/p>\n

      The word limit for Abstract is 300 words.<\/p>\n

      The word limit for Full paper is 3000-6000 words.<\/p>\n

      The Abstract and the Full paper must be typed in Times New Roman Font and the font size must be 12 on a A4 size paper with 1.5 line spacing.<\/p>\n

      Footnoting and Citation must be according to Blue Book 20th Edition.<\/p>\n

      Abstract along with Covering Page and the Full Paper must be submitted electronically on:\u00a0ccplap@nuals.ac.in<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n
