The interests of stakeholders (besides shareholders) have become quite prominent to necessitate their recognition by corporate boards. Apart from legal requirements, global trends point towards greater stakeholder engagement as a means to enhance the reputation of companies. Corporate law reform in India has introduced duties of directors on boards to act in the interests of stakeholders such as employees, community and the environment. The seminar\/lecture will outline the background to stakeholder responsibility, discuss the structure of the Companies Act, 2013 in India on the topic, and conclude with the significant challenges that emerge and practical considerations that need to be tackled.<\/p>\n
About the Resource Person: <\/strong>Dr. Umakanth Varottil, Associate Professor & Director of Graduate Coursework Studies, Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore<\/p>\n Dr. Umakanth Varottil is an Associate Professor and the Director of Graduate Coursework Studies at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore. He specializes in corporate law and governance, mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance. While his work is generally comparative in nature, his specific focus is on India and Singapore. He has co-authored or co-edited four books published articles in international journals and founded the\u00a0IndiaCorpLaw Blog. He has also taught on a visiting basis at law schools in Australia, India, Italy, New Zealand and the United States. He is the recipient of several\u00a0academicmedals and honours.<\/p>\n Prior to his foray into\u00a0academia, Dr. Umakanth was a partner at a pre-eminent law firm in India.
