Khanwilkar and Dr D.Y. Chandrachud, JJ., passed order stating that the \u201cFemale Genital Mutilation\u201d case be referred to a 5-Judge Constitution bench.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Background:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) followed by the Dawoodi Bohra Community in India was earlier challenged on the constitutionality aspect in the Supreme Court. The arguments in the earlier hearings revolved around the matter being referred to a Constitution Bench. The petition filed, sought for the issuance of orders to impose a complete ban on practice\u00a0of FGM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Therefore, AG K.K. Venugopal and Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi in consonance asked the bench to refer the matter to a Constitution Bench.
