Supreme Court<\/strong>: In the petition highlighting the erosion of the Mahakaleshwar\u00a0Jyotirlingam,\u00a0Ujjain due to the religious offerings, the bench of Arun Mishra and UU Lalit, J held that the Court cannot\u00a0dictate\u00a0or prescribe\u00a0or\u00a0restrain\u00a0the\u00a0religious\u00a0practices\u00a0and\u00a0Pujas\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0performed in\u00a0temple as they\u00a0are\u00a0required\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0performed\u00a0in accordance\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0ancient\u00a0rituals\u00a0and\u00a0practices, however,\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0same\u00a0time, it\u00a0has\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0ensured\u00a0that\u00a0no\u00a0damage\u00a0is\u00a0caused\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0lingam.<\/p>\n

The Court, hence, directed that in order to\u00a0prevent\u00a0further erosion\u00a0of\u00a0Lingam, a should be\u00a0prepared Plan by the Temple\u00a0Committee and other stakeholders within reasonable\u00a0time,\u00a0regarding\u00a0the\u00a0entire\u00a0offering\u00a0materials\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0lingam\u00a0to be\u00a0manufactured\u00a0and\u00a0provided\u00a0by\u00a0temple\u00a0itself\u00a0as\u00a0is\u00a0done\u00a0in\u00a0several famous\u00a0temples\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0Southern\u00a0part\u00a0of\u00a0India\u00a0and\u00a0other\u00a0places.\u00a0The Court said:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cBy pouring\u00a0the\u00a0adulterated\u00a0Milk,\u00a0Ghee,\u00a0Kumkum,\u00a0Gulal,\u00a0Abir\u00a0containing chemicals\u00a0due\u00a0to\u00a0adulteration\u00a0is\u00a0improper\u00a0and\u00a0cannot\u00a0be\u00a0permitted\u00a0to be\u00a0part\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0ritual.\u00a0Lingam\u00a0cannot\u00a0be\u00a0permitted\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0destroyed\u00a0by chemical\u00a0reactions\u00a0of\u00a0impure\u00a0materials\u00a0or\u00a0by\u00a0pouring\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0dirty\u00a0water such\u00a0acts\u00a0of\u00a0offerings\u00a0cannot\u00a0be\u00a0allowed\u00a0and\u00a0as\u00a0are\u00a0done\u00a0innocently\u00a0by the\u00a0people\u00a0unaware\u00a0of\u00a0ill\u00a0effect\u00a0on\u00a0lingam.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Regarding the practice of offering of Bhang (Cannabis), the Court said that it\u00a0is\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0Temple\u00a0Committee to\u00a0decide\u00a0on\u00a0these\u00a0rituals\u00a0and\u00a0which\u00a0material\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0used\u00a0by\u00a0it\u00a0and\u00a0in which\u00a0quantity\u00a0for\u00a0purpose\u00a0of\u00a0Puja\u00a0by\u00a0Temple\u00a0and\u00a0for\u00a0how\u00a0much\u00a0time, in\u00a0what\u00a0manner\u00a0Bhang\u00a0should\u00a0be\u00a0applied\u00a0and\u00a0in\u00a0what\u00a0rituals.\u00a0 The Court also asked the Temple\u00a0Committee\u00a0to\u00a0invite\u00a0and\u00a0consider\u00a0various\u00a0views for\u00a0further\u00a0improvement\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0temple.<\/p>\n

Noticing that the\u00a0Mritunjaya\u00a0Mahadev\u00a0temple is\u00a0most\u00a0ancient Jyotirlingam\u00a0in\u00a0one\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0ancient\u00a0cities\u00a0of\u00a0India,\u00a0Ujjain & \u2018Simhast\u2019\u00a0is also\u00a0organised\u00a06\u00a0years\u00a0and\u00a012\u00a0years\u00a0which\u00a0has\u00a0international\u00a0importance visited\u00a0by\u00a0several\u00a0millions\u00a0of\u00a0people on which thousands of\u00a0crores\u00a0of\u00a0rupees\u00a0is spent by the Government, \u00a0the Court said:<\/p>\n

\u201cPuja \u00a0 is \u00a0 to be \u00a0 performed \u00a0 in \u00a0 such \u00a0 a \u00a0 manner \u00a0 which \u00a0 should \u00a0 be befitting\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0deity\u00a0and\u00a0not\u00a0to\u00a0cause\u00a0erosion\u00a0itself\u00a0of\u00a0lingam\u00a0for\u00a0which so \u00a0 much \u00a0 infrastructure \u00a0 exists. \u00a0 Lingam \u00a0 is \u00a0 known \u00a0 as \u2018Mrityunjaya Mahadev\u2019,\u00a0who\u00a0prevents\u00a0from\u00a0destruction,\u00a0it\u00a0cannot\u00a0be\u00a0permitted\u00a0to\u00a0be destructed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
